Lukas Volger is the author of two other cookbooks, Vegetarian Entreés That Won’t Leave You Hungry and, most recently, Bowl. The best veg burger cookbook I have seen

This cookbook has a great variety of burger recipes. Many others like it have mainly variations on bean burgers. Not this. It has a wide range of base ingredients and numerous methods. It gives me lots of inspiration to adapt to ingredients I have on hand. Taste is subjective. I found that a number or recipes were either very over or very under seasoned for me. The falafel style burger needed lots more spice to mimic real falafel flavor. Another had so much fresh ginger that no other flavors were detectable. Yet another called for so much sun dried tomato that I knew to cut way back on the quantity. Sometimes the recipes weren't specific enough - example: a burger calls for one celery root. Well, there is enough of a size difference in celery root to really affect the burger. A measured cup quantity would have turned out a more successful product. Those burgers came out much too watery due to using a largish celery root. I also found that the burger size or quantity was not consistent. Following a recipe and shaping the given number of servings could result in a giant burger or an appropriately sized one. Finally, my pet peeve: no nutritional information is given. I still give this 4 stars because the second time you make any of these recipes, the burger can be exceptional if you know your ingredients. Again, lots of inspiration using many different non-meat bases. If this book had been properly tested, edited and included nutritional info, I would be buying it over and over as a gift.

Brings Much Needed Variety to Veggie Patties

I was intrigued by this title, and it has a very reasonable price, so I ordered a copy. Not knowing the author or the publishing company, or having heard anything about the book, other than having it come up on an amazon random suggestion, I was wary. Well, it appeared in the mail, and I was immediately intrigued by many of the recipes. I paged through and wanted to immediately make almost all the burgers. I am sitting at my desk to an extraordinary lunch right now of a baked quinoa and spinach burger. [I topped it with melted cheddar.]

Let's face it. Veggie patties can be extraordinarily boring, but I've been striving to eat less meat at lunchtime and have been buying the pre-packaged frozen selections. This book is fantastic for making your very own, from-scratch burgers.

The variety is awesome! Lentils, beans, mushrooms, quinoa, spinach, veggies. Now I could eat veggie burgers every day and not feel like I'm eating the same old thing.

Seriously, this quinoa/spinach burger is so delicious. I'm going to stop writing this review and enjoy my lunch. Buy this book. It's awesome.

Great veggie burgers, but some recipes are complex

I like this book, I really do. The veggie burgers here are very, very tasty and most of the recipes are well thought out. Lukas Volger starts off explaining the basic ingredients to make a good veggie burger and then dives into some really delicious recipes: bean, grain, and nut burgers; vegetable burgers; tofu, seitan, and tvp burgers. He includes a really nice section on making your own burger buns (and these are GREAT!) with information about making them gluten-free. There are sections on salads and sides and condiments to go along with the burgers.

A few of my favorites are the bean burgers, mushroom burgers, pub grub burgers, and Portobello burgers.

*BUT* even though I like this book so much and successfully have made a number of the recipes, I have some real concerns about the way he has put some of them together. First, the recipes are for four or six burgers and these are just too much unless you are cooking for a large family or a party. I constantly have to cut down on the ingredients to make burgers for just one, two or three of us.

Second, the lists of ingredients for some of the burgers are insanely long. For instance, the recipe to make six tempeh burgers has 23 separate ingredients. I appreciate the attempt to make a good recipe, but I am not going to scrounge up 23 different ingredients for a veggie burger, no matter how tasty. (Do I really need to add 1/4 teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder for six burgers?)

And finally, I wish he had included nutritional information for each of the recipes. Knowing the fat, sodium, calorie, and cholesterol content would make it easier to choose recipes.

But generally speaking, the recipes are extremely good and the end results are excellent. This cookbook has a permanent place in my kitchen.

Army of Israel puts to rest ancient myths and sheds new light on forgotten heroes, both male and female. Recruited from a single religious organization, this battalion was perhaps the most unusual body of men ever to serve in America's armed forces. Between 1846 and 1848 its members played pivotal roles in events of such magnitude that they continue to shape the nation's destiny and the lives of its people.

This documentary study seeks to place the larger political and military role of the Mormon Battalion in the context of the history of the American West through the papers and accounts of the participants, supplemented with thorough explanatory text, notes, and references. The March: Without opposition or firing a shot, the Mormon infantry tramped across the width of what was then northern Mexico and built a road as they went-Cooke's Wagon Road. Their explorations helped influence the decision in 1853 to acquire the Gadsden Purchase in southern Arizona.

Service in California: The good behavior and industry of battalion members accomplished far more than the muskets they shouldered in pacifying California. They defended ranches against raids by hostile natives, they sank wells, manufactured bricks, and built new buildings at Los Angeles and San Diego. The command arrived too late to take part in the last battles of the American occupation, but just in time to carry out President Polk's orders to treat the people of the region as fellow citizens, not as subjugated enemies, reversing the damage done by Robert Stockton and his underlings.

Explorations and Adventure: Besides exploring and building Cooke's Wagon Road across the Southwest, men chosen from the battalion escorted General Kearny and party, including Fremont, to Fort Leavenworth in 1847. Near Donner Lake in the Sierra Nevada, they buried the bodies of Donner party members who had perished in the snow over the previous winter. Battalion veterans opened a new wagon road over the Sierra Nevada, known today as the Mormon-Carson Emigrant Trail, which became in 1849 the main thoroughfare of the gold rush to the new El Dorado. They pioneered Hensley's Salt Lake Cutoff, one of the California Trail's major branches and blazed the wagon road from Los Angeles to Salt Lake.

The Gold Rush: Battalion veterans in California witnessed an event that would transform the nation almost overnight and touch off a massive population shift west that still continues. As employees of James Marshall and John Sutter, two of these men-and two only-would record the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill and the day it happened, 24 January 1848. Other veterans soon scored the first major gold strike when they discovered the rich placer diggings at Mormon Island.

New Voices from the Borderlands: Army of Israel contains dozens of previously unpublished eyewitness accounts of the American conquest of the Southwest, including narratives by the fortotten Mormons who spent the winter of 1846 in today's Colorado. The accounts include a moving set of women's letters and colorful descriptions of encounters with Apache moonshiners, freebooting Mountaineers, ruthless Comancheros, Wakara's horse raiders, and heroic Mexican patriots.

About the Author
Will Bagley is an independent historian who has written about overland emigration, frontier violence, railroads, mining, and the Mormons. Bagley has published extensively over the years and is the author and editor of many books, articles, and reviews in professional journals. Bagley is the series editor of Arthur H. Clark Company's documentary history series, KINGDOM IN THE WEST: The Mormons and the American Frontier. Bagley has been a Wallace Stegner Centennial Fellow at the University of Utah and the Archibald Hannah, Jr. Fellow in American History at Yale University's Beinecke Library. Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows has won numerous awards including a Spur Award from Western Writers of America, the Bancroft History Prize from the Denver Public Library, Westerners International Best Book, and the Western History Association Caughey Book Prize for the most distinguished book on the history of the American West. So Rugged and Mountainous: Blazing the Trails to Oregon and California, 1812-1848 is the first of four volumes of Overland West: The Story of the Oregon and California Trails Series.

Independent historian David L. Bigler is a Utah native, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and a University of Utah graduate in journalism. He received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Southern Utah State College at Cedar City, now Southern Utah University. He retired as director of public affairs for U.S. Steel in 1986 to devote full time to Mormon and western history. He is a fellow and an honorary life member, Utah State Historical Society; a former director, Utah State Board of History and Friends of University of Utah Libraries; and past president, Oregon-California Trails Association. His books and articles have won awards from the Utah State Historical Society, Westerners International and The Mormon History Association. A superb effort

David Bigler and Will Bagley are two of the nation's leading experts on the history of the Rocky Mountain Mormons.
They have combined to present an extremely readable history of the Mormon Battalion - an army unit that traversed thousands of difficult miles and never fired a shot in anger.
Extremely well researched, ARMY OF ISRAEL is must reading for those interested in the many facets of 19th Century Mormonism.

Mormon Battalion narrative

The significance of the events from 1846-1848 in the history of our country has long been overlooked. Education in many schools jumps from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War; completely disregarding the major influence the Mexican-American War had on our nation. Not only did the war result in the United States increasing it's territory by over a third, but the wealth of mineral resources in California, Arizona, and New Mexico helped to propel the United States to global prominence in the twentieth century. But if the war as a whole is neglected, the unique contributions of a single group to the formation of the U.S. border and to the development of American western migration is almost completely forgotten. The Mormon Battalion, which marched in 1846 from Iowa to California, blazed a trail that would define our nation's borders and history. Published in 2000, ARMY OF ISRAEL: Mormon Battalion narratives gives a fresh look at this regiment's history from their own viewpoint. The editors are both historians with backgrounds in journalism and a special interest in the American Far West. Mr. Bigler is a past president of the Oregon-California Trails Association, founder and first president of the Utah Westerners, and has served on the Utah Board of State History. He has also edited the diary of his great-uncle Azariah Smith, one of the members of the Battalion. Mr. Bagley has edited several books and narratives on the American West and serves as the chief editor of the series KINGDOM IN THE WEST: The Mormons and the American Frontier. The narrative focuses primarily on the events encountered by the battalion during the actual march from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Los Angeles, California in from June 1846 to January 1847. Thought the infantry regiment made the entire journey without firing a single shot, the march was the longest in the history of any American army. It's legacy, however, is much greater than simple trivia. On its way to California, the battalion occupied Santa Fe, Tucson, Yuma, San Diego, and Los Angeles, instituting the first American military presence in each of these cities. They were also to first to construct an east-west wagon road, which intersected the great mountain ranges of the Southwest. Previously, Mexican and Native American merchant traffic traveled north-south along the valleys. The roads were a major factor in the mass migration to California that would soon follow. The roads continued to be used until 1880, when the railroad was built along the same path. Interstate 10 now follows almost the exact same path that the company forged over 150 years ago. The little "Army of the West", made up of five regiments of one hundred men each, made President James Polk's vision of a continental nation into reality. In the Introduction the editors claim, "Only in recent times have historians begun to realize the achievements and the important role the Mormon soldiers performed in California and Western history. The narratives found in these pages reveal ... the significant part these men and women played in that history" (p. 29). Fortunately for us, a great number of the soldiers kept account of their experiences in pocket diaries, which many then transcribed into more detailed journals after the war. These documents not only provide us with detailed information on their day-to-day activities, but also give us eyewitness accounts of the major events of this period - the occupation of Northern Mexico, the opening of major transportation routes, and the discovery of gold in California. The book proceeds chronographically, beginning with the situation surrounding the Mormons and the U.S. government at the time. The Mormons were in need of money to finance their exodus to Utah; President Polk was in need of an army to occupy California. Polk's concern for the West Coast was not over Mexican possession but of the threat of British invasion. Once the deal was brokered, the Battalion set out almost immediately, under the command of Gen. Stephen W. Kearny and Lt. Col. Philip St. George Cooke. The editors utilize a great number of original documents from James Polk's presidential papers, War Department records, and Congressional archives. Correspondence between the Mormons and the government is also well recorded. The narrative then turns to the march itself, which is presented mostly by means of diaries and journals from the soldiers and their officers. The editors employ a framework that keeps the narrative interesting and ties the various accounts together, giving historical background for each event. This approach enables them to let the documents stand on their own merit but also provides them with the opportunity to accentuate events that demonstrate the importance of the Mormon Battalion campaign. The editors clearly explain the ramifications of events not only during the war but even down to our time. The result is indeed convincing. They make proper use of their source data describing not only the events but also their historical significance. The narrative is interesting and informative. An effort is made to include the journals of women who traveled with the army, as well as to maintain a balance between purely historical documents with entertaining stories. On the other hand, although the stated scope of the book is to present the experiences of the Battalion from their own perspective, there is very little information on Native Americans and even less about the Mexicans. Additionally, though the editors make an attempt to curb their glowing assessment of the Battalion by introducing a few arguments that call the Mormons' intentions into question, the effort is half-hearted and falls short of credibility. What remains is a biased depiction of the campaign that nonetheless does not detract from the authenticity of the source documents. The end result is an extremely readable book about an extraordinary group of people who played a part in our nation's history that often goes unnoticed.

Several eye-witness sourced perspectives are provided including the journal of teenager William Pace, letters from some of the women associated with the battalion; as well as military and government correspondence. Army Of Israel: Mormon Battalion Narratives is a superlatively presented and informative contribution to American history in general, and the role of a unique military command in particular.

A family and a country in turmoil

Pa Chin's "Family" is an excellent, absorbing account of one family in early 20th century China; through the conflicts between the generations, we see the larger conflicts about to engulf the entire country. The family is the Kao clan, five generations living in one complex headed by the Venerable Master Kao, the ultimate autocrat, monarch of all he surveys within his walls, unwilling and unable to admit that his country and his family are changing before his eyes. The story centers around three brothers in the younger generation; Chueh-Hsin, married against his will to a woman chosen for him by his family, stuck in a job he hates, also chosen by his family, trying to navigate through life with his "compliant bow" philosophy which dictates that he must not oppose his elders under any circumstances; Chueh-Min, the second brother, determined to marry the girl he loves despite his family's opposition, and the youngest brother, Chueh-Hui, who sees his family as a ball and chain, loathes everything they represent, and is chafing to break free and live his own life. Pa Chin clearly identifies with Chueh-Hui; he rails against the stifling conformity of Chinese family life, which determines that everyone subordinate their will to the family elders; but in this reviewer's opinion, he doesn't give enough credit to the strengths in the same family life that held Chinese society together for thousands of years. However, this is a minor caveat. "Family" is a totally absorbing account of a family in crisis; on the one hand we sympathize with the bind Chueh-Hsin is caught up in as the oldest son, able to please neither his elders who demand his total compliance with the family traditions nor his younger brothers who need his assistance in their efforts to break free of the confines of those traditions, and on the other hand we empathize with the youngsters' efforts to live their own lives and realize their own destinies. "Family is the classic struggle of the individual vs. the collective good, and the outcome, as seen in the unfolding story of China, is still in doubt.

A Moving and Beautifully Written Book

I read this book for a college class on East Asian History. I don't often enjoy required books, but this was an exception. "Family" filled me with many emotions; while reading it I cried (or would have if I hadn't been in a public library), I was overjoyed, hopeful, despondent. Pa Chin is especially good at showing how his characters influence and are influenced by society. He makes you really care about his characters and believe what they believe. "Family" is a good choice if you like novels that focus on society; for example, "Middlemarch","Vanity Fair", "The Jungle", "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". It is indeed a classic.
