Fanged Noumena: Collected Writings 1987 - 2007, by Nick Land

Fanged Noumena assembles for the first time the writings of Nick Land, variously described as ‘rabid nihilism’, ‘mad black Deleuzianism’, ‘accelerationism’, and ‘cybergothic’.Wielding weaponized, machinically-recombined versions of Deleuze and Guattari, Reich and Freud, in the company of fellow ‘werewolves’ such as Nietzsche, Bataille, Artaud, Trakl and Cioran, to a cutup soundtrack of Bladerunner, Terminator and Apocalypse Now, Land plotted a rigorously schizophrenic escape route out of academic philosophy, and declared all-out war on the Human Security System. Despite his ‘disappearance’, Land’s output has been a crucial underground influence both on recent Speculative Realist thought, and on artists, writers, musicians and filmmakers invigorated by his uncompromising and abrasive philosophical vision.

Long the subject of rumor and vague legend, Land’s turbulent post-genre theory-fictions of cybercapitalist meltdown smear cyberpunk, philosophy, arithmetic, poetics, cryptography, anthropology, grammatology and the occult into unrecognizable and gripping hybrids. Beginning with Land’s radical rereadings of Heidegger, Nietzsche and Kant, Fanged Noumena terminates in Professor Barker’s cosmic theory of geo-trauma and neo-qabbalistic attempts to formulate a numerical anti-language.

Fanged Noumena is a dizzying trip through land’s rigorous, incisive and provocative work, establishing it as an indispensable resource for radically inhuman thought in the twenty-first century.

Land had the most brilliantly seductive and meteoric mind, endlessly imaginative and capable of adopting, inhabiting and discarding any philosophical position. With him - and rightly so - philosophy infected every area of life, and sheer vitality of life reverberated in his thinking.
I see Fanged Noumena as a kind of righteous revenge. Nick was dismissed by professional philosophers because they simply didn't want to think and preferred their turgid academic complacency. I always admired him for his unwavering desire to take thought to its absolute limit and then see how much harder one could push.
Simon Critchley

These extraordinary texts, superheated compounds of severe abstraction and scabrous wit, testify to a uniquely penetrating intelligence, fusing transcendental philosophy, number theory, geophysics, biology, cryptography and occultism into startlingly cohesive but increasingly delirious theory-fictions.
Ray Brassier

This is theory as cyberpunk fiction: Deleuze-Guattari's concept of capitalism as the virtual unnameable Thing that haunts all previous formations pulp-welded to the timebending of the Terminator films. Land's machinic theory-poetry parallelled the digital intensities of 90s jungle, techno and doomcore, anticipating 'impending human extinction becoming accessible as a dance-floor'.

These texts are bite-marks quite different from those left by any academic species of cross-bred monstrosity: Surgically well-placed, covered with rainbows of infectious bruises, asymmetrical, whilst at times they suggest intimate playfulness, they are profusely saturated with acidic secretions. It is hard to imagine how a noisome beast like this could slip away under the nose of both literature and philosophy at the same time, largely unnoticed. Land generates synthetic strains of thought in which theory and fiction relentlessly problematize one another. Land s geotraumatics, constructed by gluing Freud and Reich to Deleuze and Guattari, proceeds on the basis of theory-fiction, with the earth as a plot where cosmic twists take shape. In the field of geotraumatics, not only the geological history of the earth but also its biological, cultural and economic evolutions can be subjected to forensic psychoanalytical profiling. Yet even more importantly, the earth and all its terrestrial narratives can be analyzed on the basis of their convoluted traumatic syntheses toward the abyssal outside. Land s work is rife for misunderstanding, but this is essential since it forces us to recalibrate his weapons and to reevaluate our capacities as humans while we renavigate minefields at the outer frontiers of thought (and praxis). All in all, here is Nick Land as the 'patient zero' of speculative thought for the 21st century. --Reza Negarestani

About the Author
Nick Land was lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Warwick, UK, from 1994-99, during which time he accrued a remarkable notoriety, provoking both adulation and execration. His polemical, genrebusting monograph The Thirst for Annihilation: Georges Bataille and Virulent Nihilism (Routledge, 1990) has been hailed as reaching a pitch comparable with Cioran or Nietzsche [Parallax]. Having been retired from academia, he now lives and writes in Shanghai.

The recurring problem with Kindle editions of academic works
By Diego
I'm not going to write a lot in the sense of context of who is Nick Land and what this volume comprises; academic reviews are available at search engines. I'm giving it three stars for two reasons:

1) "Collected writings" is a fair term, if very literal. The book is organized as a series of chapters that start out as dense essays, if already experimental in style, and decohere gradually into frantically argued polemics and finally free verse. This should be pointed out; it's about half the value proposition the estimated number of pages would seem to make it to be.

2) This is a Kindle edition of an academic work without page numbers, again. This is pointed out again and again by many many people who have been buying Kindle editions of academic books. Page numbers fluctuate with devices and, in computer clients, window sizes; this is a problem for anyone who might need to quote citations into their own academic work. This isn't hard to fix, and needs to be fixed -- across all academic presses putting out Kindle publications in the humanities. Including this.

City of Thieves: A Novel, by David Benioff

From the critically acclaimed author of The 25th Hour and When the Nines Roll Over and co-creator of the HBO series Game of Thrones, a captivating novel about war, courage, survival — and a remarkable friendship that ripples across a lifetime.

During the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown into the same cell as a handsome deserter named Kolya. Instead of being executed, Lev and Kolya are given a shot at saving their own lives by complying with an outrageous directive: secure a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. In a city cut off from all supplies and suffering unbelievable deprivation, Lev and Kolya embark on a hunt through the dire lawlessness of Leningrad and behind enemy lines to find the impossible.

By turns insightful and funny, thrilling and terrifying, the New York Times bestseller City of Thieves is a gripping, cinematic World War II adventure and an intimate coming-of-age story with an utterly contemporary feel for how boys become men.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Author and screenwriter Benioff follows up The 25th Hour with this hard-to-put-down novel based on his grandfather's stories about surviving WWII in Russia. Having elected to stay in Leningrad during the siege, 17-year-old Lev Beniov is caught looting a German paratrooper's corpse. The penalty for this infraction (and many others) is execution. But when Colonel Grechko confronts Lev and Kolya, a Russian army deserter also facing execution, he spares them on the condition that they acquire a dozen eggs for the colonel's daughter's wedding cake. Their mission exposes them to the most ghoulish acts of the starved populace and takes them behind enemy lines to the Russian countryside. There, Lev and Kolya take on an even more daring objective: to kill the commander of the local occupying German forces. A wry and sympathetic observer of the devastation around him, Lev is an engaging and self-deprecating narrator who finds unexpected reserves of courage at the crucial moment and forms an unlikely friendship with Kolya, a flamboyant ladies' man who is coolly reckless in the face of danger. Benioff blends tense adventure, a bittersweet coming-of-age and an oddly touching buddy narrative to craft a smart crowd-pleaser. (May)

From The New Yorker
In the six years since his critically praised début, "The 25th Hour," Benioff has produced a story collection and a handful of screenplays, including the blockbuster "Troy." The imprint of his film work is evident in this novel, a finely honed but too easily sentimental adventure story set during the siege of Leningrad. Lev, the mousy, virginal son of a disappeared Jewish poet, is jailed by the Russian Army for looting; in prison and awaiting execution, he shares a cell with a blowhard blond infantryman accused of desertion. When a strange colonel offers the pair an impossible task in exchange for their lives, they set off on a journey that takes them through a series of nightmarish war zones, populated by cannibals, prostitutes, starving children, and demonic Nazi chess enthusiasts. Benioff finds a good deal of humor amid the grisly absurdities of wartime, but does so at the expense of real emotional engagement.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Readers have lately been exposed to a great deal of postmodern historical fiction, stories whose focus on the past merely reveals the astigmatism of an unreliable narrator. Perhaps tired of squinting at history, most reviewers found David Benioff’s novel refreshingly clear. With a framing device that serves to warn the reader that the author’s life is far removed from that of a Russian partisan, the narrative of City of Thieves lacks much of the anxiety over the inaccessibility of the past that has plagued recent novels of the genre. Critics also felt that Benioff avoids another form of pretentiousness, the heavy-handed tone that characterizes many historical novels (particularly those about war). However, this deftness makes the plot of the novel move along far too easily; one skeptical critic compared it to a Hollywood “buddy story.” However, most reviewers seemed eager for Benioff to write the script.

Great Book - Not just another book of Historical Fiction
By A Midwesterner in Jersey
I would never have dreamed that a story set during the WW II Siege of Leningrad could be as engaging and darkly humorous as this book, but the Author has done a fine job of bringing a diverse set of characters to life, two of whom have been given an impossible mission (find a dozen eggs!) in an unbearable situation (the Blockade of Leningrad, and its consequent famine).

I have over a dozen books on the Siege of Leningrad (for a project I'm working on), and I have to say that the Author portrays the siege with accuracy, if not with full depth - in large part because the story is told from the viewpoint of Lev, a 17 year old boy. This doesn't give the reader an omniscient overview of "the big picture", but it certainly provides a very specific perspective on life in and around the city, and one well worth reading.

It's an "impression" of life during the city, and I have to say that with one exception - Lev would have been much hungrier and weaker in real life - a fairly accurate one. Readers of "The 900 Days" will recognize the inspiration for a specific scene, (Hint: Beware of well fed men in a famine) but how the characters react to what happens makes the action their own. And what characters!

The two main characters that carry the book deserve to be remembered as a classic pairing. Their interactions, observations and the journey they take on their absurd quest are one that I will remember for a very long time. Lev, the narrator, will remind most adult men of their own awkward youth. Wry, dry, frustrated and a little plodding, he is enormously sympathetic, while seemingly always in the process of doing a "Straight Man's Slow Burn" in a comedy routine. Kolya, an accidental Red Army deserter, is overly confident, irresistably charming and scatologically minded. Imagine a dirty minded Bugs Bunny come to life as a 6ft tall, Blond hair Blue eyed Russian and you're not too far off. By the end of the story, these two have formed a real bond and friendship - one that seems real, rather than forced for the sake of the story. The supporting characters are all given real weight - you feel that this really could have happened, and that these aren't just puppets the author is manipulating, but real people.

Is it serious? Yes.
Is it a war story? Yes.
Is it funny? Yes.
Is it a coming of age story? Yes.
Is it historically accurate? Yes.

It's simply got quite a lot to offer to any reader. I highly recommend it to both the general reading public and to WWII buffs.

Extremely Entertaining
By Doug
I have read some good fiction lately, but this one is special like "Catcher in the Rye" or "The Curious Incident" or maybe "The Kite Runner". Instead of telling the story, I will make observations as to why I loved it:

1. Many historical fiction novels are written from the perspective of the thinking of the time. Although it is interesting to observe how people think people thought in the past, it can be a little too un-modern and sometimes boring, like reading "Moby Dick" or some other great, but somewhat over the top book. Here, we are set back in time by the grandson who is just like us, telling the story his grandfather tells him, but with language and interpretations that are how we think about things today. Instead of finding this tool to be unrealistic and too Hollywood modern, I found just the opposite. I felt like I really was back in time and I related to the characters like they were my best friends and buddies. I loved this approach to history telling.

2. The primary relationship in the book is between a shy, 17 year old Jewish boy who is intelligent, clever, educated and a great story teller. There is a running dialogue in his head describing his sometimes ridiculous and unimportant thoughts and observations as life threatening things are occurring. His older buddy is a young "man of the world" a college boy who is experienced with women, a writer and philosopher, a handsome and sometimes arrogant guy. He puts his arm around his younger shy friend's shoulder and starts to teach him about wine women and song. It is a touching and fun relationship that works as well as any friendship relationship I've ever read. The observations of the younger as to the older's sometimes graphic and raunchy statements and experiences are absolutely brilliant and spot on. This is how life and relationships really work and the author has been able to convey these experiences in a way that makes us relive similar things in our lives as older kids taught us about what really goes on in the adult world and we're half thinking it's a lie and half believing it, yet shaking our heads. I can't think of a book I've read that does this kind of coming of age relationship as well.

3. Because the story moves fast and is more about relationships and internal observations, you would think that the history of the time is secondary. However, the story gives us a very realistic feeling of how it must have been to be suffering through the invasion of the Germans into Leningrad in the horrible cold of the winter without much good food or shelter or equipment. There is a lot of good information about the cold and calculated way of the Nazis and the underfunded and yet heroic attempts of the Russian people to fend them off. And yet, as important as the historical setting of the book is, the thing that makes it work well is the commentary and thoughts of our two friends and eventually heroes.

4. There are many other great characters in the book from the brilliant and interesting Nazi leader, an intense and talented young female sniper, and the spoiled and wealthy man who sends them on their ridiculously trivial mission in the first place.

This book is the reason you read fiction.

I am the yegg man
By Lonya
David Benioff's "City of Thieves" is something of a coming-of-age tale with a twist. The twist is the fact that the tale is set in the besieged city of Leningrad in January, 1942. It is a city at war surrounded by the German army. The city is under martial law but its people are starving and fighting for food and even cannibalism is the inevitable result. The two `heroes' of the story, Lev Beniov and Kolya Vlasov are each picked up by the Red Army for crimes against the state. Lev is caught looting (taking the knife from a dead German soldier). Kolya, already a soldier is picked up and accused of desertion. Both crimes are grounds for immediate execution but the two boys are thrown together and given a `secret mission' by a Red Army officer, Colonel Grechko, who agrees to release them on the condition that they steal two dozen eggs in time for his daughter's wedding. The two dozen eggs are essential to make her a wedding cake. If they fail, they will be hunted down and shot. And with that bizarre quest ringing in their ears they are let go and sent out to scour Leningrad and the surrounding countryside in a quest for enough eggs to save their lives.

I liked City of Thieves for a number of reasons. First, Benioff does an excellent job setting the story up. It begins as a narrative of his own life as a writer and then evolves into getting his grandfather Lev to tell him the story of his experience during the war. All the author knows is that "my grandfather, the knife fighter, killed two Germans before he was eighteen". The story unfolds as a narrative told to his grandson. Second, the characters of Lev and Kolya were well-drawn and engaging even if Lev and Kolya did play into a couple of stereotypes, Lev the shy, quiet, intelligent Russian of Jewish descent is scrawny, short, and horribly shy around girls and seems to be able to do no more than dream wistfully of some dreamlike romantic encounters when he gets older. Kolya is handsome, tall, athletic and an accomplished Romeo. He has, if even some of his stories are true, become quite accomplished in the art of seduction. Third, the plot is well designed and well thought out. This seemingly bizarre search for eggs takes them through the dangerous streets of Leningrad into German-occupied territory where they meet up with a local group of partisans. Each story unfolds as a self-contained vignette but each has its own climactic moment that propels the reader into the next chapter. Last, Benioff has done an excellent job in creating a historically accurate picture of Leningrad during its siege. I've read a lot of non-fiction accounts of life in Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Moscow during the early years of WWII and nothing in this novel strikes me as out of touch with life during the siege including the Colonel's request for two dozen eggs.

The outcome of the story may be thought of by some as predictable but I found the ending more than satisfying even if some of the `results' did not take me totally by surprise.

I think City of Thieves is an excellent story and well worth reading. L. Fleisig

From the Publisher
Breaking the lust barrier has proven to be the great obstacle in recovery from sex addiction. IMPOSSIBLE JOY is a breakthrough book for sex-addicted and other Christians in or out of the church or 12 Step recovery movement. It is the long- missing link between religious belief and a recovery that works. Ron J. has given us the incredible story of his encounter with the humanly-tempted, suffering, saving Son of man who was lost to him and many others in the religious System. Not for the faint- hearted, JOY promises fulfillment of what the Steps prepare the way for, finding what our lust was really looking for.

From the Author
Back from that "pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization" of sex on the streets, and now several years sexually sober, I was nevertheless down for the count. That impossible temptation in the Post Office had me on the ropes, with no defense against the "drink" that would reignite the hellish obsession. That's when I started crying out, "I don't have it, Lord! Sobriety is not enough! I've got to know who you are for me!" And for the first time ever, in that spiritual conflict only the lust- addicted will understand, I felt the loving, liberating Presence of the saving One.

That was the beginning of a sea change in my recovery, which for years had been driven by fear. But now, there was joyous victory in "the expulsive power of a new affection." Later, in an isolated cabin in the high Sierras, pouring over Jesus' life in the Gospels, struck with his utter humanity and seeing the Son of man being made sin for me, I began to discover the One I had supposedly believed in all my life, but had never known. The One who was actually saving me from my lust--in my lust--one temptation at a time. That's where this book got started. He is my impossible joy today, the One I wish everyone could discover.

About the Author
Ron J. (pseudonym) went from washing dishes in a house of ill repute at sixteen and bucking rivets on bombers at seventeen to serving in the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII. Ron J. has written three books and scores of papers for the 12 Step sex addiction recovery movement from 1979 to the present. Victory over Temptation
By A Customer
Having recently finished reading Impossible Joy, I feel compelled to respond to some of the statements made in the previous review.
First, Ron's premise that we addicts are "sinners" is completely consistent with the 12 step movement. Our illness compels us to perpetrate moral crimes. The fact that it is truly an illness explains why we can't stop on our own, but does not absolve us of the responsibility for, or consequence of our "sins". Ron's analysis of scripture clearly articulates how Jesus, the true "higher power," not only saved us from the ultimate consequence of our sins, but can also provide ongoing victory over all of our temptations, one temptation at a time.
The previous reviewer's assertion that the original 12 steps formulated by Alcoholics Anonymous doesn't have Jesus in it, is laughable. Bill Wilson based the steps on the spiritual principles of the Oxford Group, a nondenominational Christian movement founded by Frank Buchman, a Lutheran minister. It is true that Bill and Dr. Bob removed references to Christ, sin, the Holy Spirit, etc, from the 12 steps in order not to alienate alcoholics of other faiths, or no faith, because AA's primary goal was sobriety, not salvation. However, the Road of Happy Destiny, mapped out in these steps, leads directly to our savior. In Impossible Joy, Ron describes how Jesus, walking with us, can bear our temptations and help us live - not free from temptation, but free from the obsession of our particular weakness and the compulsion to act on our temptation.
Certainly people who reject God's laws and his son are forced to reject this book. Recovery from addiction requires admission of our powerlessness to do right, repentance, and absolute surrender to God (Steps 1 - 3). Impossible Joy is advanced recovery, a valuable resource for us addicts who want to move beyond sobriety to true recovery.
In fairness, since this book forces us to look at our powerlessness and our desperate need for God, it will not appeal to those who can't face the truth. In fact, it could cause them to resort to politically-correct-sounding attacks and name calling.
"No God, no peace. Know God, know peace."

Unspeakably Grateful
By Brian P
Hi, my name is Brian. I am a grateful recovering sexaholic. I am so unspeakable grateful for what I am reading in this book, that words fail me. Despite having been involved in 12-Step of several years, having worked the Steps diligently, I knew I was missing something. There was, for some reason, still a spiritual misconnection. Now, through this book, I am learning why. More importantly, I am discovering the Complete Solution. Thank you SO MUCH Ron, for having the courage to write this book, and the perseverance to get it published.

The Hard and Real Truth
By Greg B.
There really are not adequate words to describe this book. I am a recovering Sexaholic and have been active in 12-Step fellowships, and this book has brought me to a new level of recovery. It has helped to point me to a new level of connection with my Savior, and has given me real hope for a life of joy. I could continue to gush for paragraphs, but I won't. Get the book, read it and learn for yourself. It is ADVANCED recovery, for an ADVANCED form of addiction, sexaholism. I know guys who have been able to maintain 15+ years of sobriety from alcohol who can't maintain a year of sobriety from lust because they can't, or won't apply this book to their lives. The solution to addiction, "slavery to sin," is simple in its description, a mere 270 some odd pages. It is however not simple to do, it takes diligence and the help of someone greater than yourself, a Savior. Until you find God, the real God, there is no hope for salvation from your powerlessness over the disease that will ultimately kill you, SIN.

I searched for help from religion, even Christianity, but Religion couldn't save me. I tried to do it on my own, I couldn't save me. I tried to get help from others, others couldn't save me. Only God, as described in this book, only Jesus could save me. This has been my experience, and whatever you believe, you can't disprove my experience, nor can you disprove the experience of Ron J.. He lays out not some theoretical formula for recovery, but rather what was "forced on him by the crucible" of his recovery. Whatever you believe, this works, and it works completely. Those who attempt to make 12-Step programs some secular attempt at hope consider this, some goverment agencies won't refer to 12-steps because they consider it a breech of seperation between church and state. And, Yes, the original name of AA was going to be "The James Gang," based on the book of James in the Bible, "The Big Big Book," but they wanted people to discover God from experience, not preaching. Discover him, I have, and you can too, and the saving power of his life, death, and resurection. Read with an open mind, try it and see if it doesn't work for you too.
