Grade 2-5-This picture-book biography of the Mexican-born artist captures the essence of her difficult life and her triumph as a painter. Written in present tense, the story has immediacy, and the magnificent full-page acrylic illustrations cry out with emotion, as is befitting the work of a passionate artist. Kahlo, often lonely, had an active fantasy life, fueled by her creation of an imaginary friend and her exposure to the work of her artist father. Stricken with polio at age seven, she turned to drawing as her solace; years later when a bus accident nearly claimed her life, art again distracted her. While the simply told yet poignant story is inspiring, the true strength of this book lies in Juan's incredible illustrations. Their brilliant colors and expressionistic style convey the sense of daring and the excitement that Kahlo demonstrated both in her zest for life and in her splendid work. Figures familiar to the artist from Mexican folklore abound and their playfulness as they dance from page to page underscores the woman's artistic spirit. Her story is sure to be an inspiration, particularly to youngsters who see life differently from their peers and who dare to express these differences in artistic ways. A bold, successful attempt at incorporating the feel of the artist's own style into an explanation of her life.

Opening the eyes of young children
By Viv
My son and I went to a restaurant that it is full of Frida's paintings. He did not like Frida's face expressions in the paintings and said: "that woman is very angry". This book helped my son to understand how artists paint their own reality and in Frida's case, she showed her physical pain in her paintings (it was easy to understand for him how he also chooses specific colors when he paints, and those colors represent his emotional stage). It was a good conversation starter for my son and me (he is seven) about how life can be very hard for some people, but still they can get the best out of it - including such colorful paintings as a result of a difficult life and physical pain. I recommend it to all parents that want to show to their young children the strength of women, the art of women, and the importance of expressing yourself in art forms. I

Beautiful, touching story and intriguing artwork
By lmorasax
I purchased this book for my 8 year old niece who is learning Spanish. I just received the book and I think it is going to be just perfect. The story depicts the life of Frida and how she finds refuge from her solitude and, later, her pain, in her art. The art in the book is absolutely beautiful. I am sure parents reading it to their children will also thoroughly enjoy it. The level of Spanish is easy enough for early learners (yet there are several sentences on some pages, to help make it challenging, as well), yet the book is sophisticated enough not to bore slightly older children.

My niece is really into fairies, and I think the magic/mystical nature of the images and their slight darkness will really capture her attention. The story is also a nice lesson in sympathy for the sick and disabled. In general, a great book for Spanish learners. The book may not be as suitable for younger, native Spanish-speaking children, as the art is a tad dark, even though they would understand the language aspect at an earlier age. (It certainly isn't at all disturbing, though. I personally find it very intriguing.) I think this would be a great book for children around 5 years of age and older.

The New Killer Diseases: How the Alarming Evolution of Germs Threatens Us All, by Elinor Levy, Mark Fischetti

The strange new disease SARS erupted apparently out of nowhere and has spread at an astonishing rate. Scary as SARS itself is, the disease is also a warning of many possible such outbreaks to come. Featuring the disturbing story of SARS—where it came from, what it is, and how to protect yourself from it—as well as those of many other recently evolved deadly scourges, The New Killer Diseases is a shocking call to arms.

All around us—in our homes, workplaces, and public spaces—bacteria and viruses are evolving at a feverish rate, and our best defenses against them are in danger of being overwhelmed. The threat posed by emerging infectious diseases is as formidable as any challenge the human race has ever faced, and the evolutionary scales may be tipping in favor of the microbes.

In The New Killer Diseases, a respected immunologist and a veteran science author introduce the vital facts the public must know about the astonishing range of killer microbes we are up against. From the SARS and West Nile viruses to mad cow and Ebola, thirty new deadly diseases have arisen since the 1970s, and twenty old scourges, such as plague and cholera, are reemerging. But the FDA only recently approved the first new type of antibiotic in thirty-four years, and vaccines for many of the most lethal viruses are a long way from development. In addition, researchers have only lately discovered that bacteria have been swapping resistance genes—genes that help them evade the drugs meant to kill them—and are evolving new mechanisms to fight off even our best drugs at a startling pace.

Featuring many remarkable stories of people who have contracted bizarre new afflictions, including that of the doctor who first diagnosed SARS and then died from it, The New Killer Diseases empowers readers by revealing in a gripping, detailed fashion the way these new diseases manifest themselves, the symptoms to watch out for, and how to get a correct diagnosis in time. The book also goes to the front lines of the war being waged by researchers and medical professionals across the country, profiling the pioneers who are leading the fight and introducing the latest scientific developments, from new genetic techniques to promising drug programs, which may allow us to beat back the microbe menace.

The New Killer Diseases arms us with the knowledge to protect ourselves and our families, leaving us alert and fully informed about the troubling extent of the formidable threat we face.

SARS, THE NEWEST KILLER

The story of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome)—why the virus spread so rapidly, and how the international community responded—is a powerful, cautionary tale about the thorny challenges we must grapple with as we confront a growing number of infectious microbes that are evolving at an alarming rate. In the chapters that follow, we explore these pressing issues, introducing all the vital information the public needs to know about how best to protect ourselves against these diseases, as well as measures the medical community and our government should be taking to fight them. SARS has unfortunately established a significant foothold around the world, and we must expect that it will continue to spread—though less rapidly—and also to evolve, just as West Nile virus, Lyme disease, and other recently emerged scourges have done. SARS is one of the fastest spreading and most virulent new diseases the world had seen in some time. Yet we might well face an even more deadly foe before long, and we must learn the lessons the SARS saga holds for us.

The good news witnessed during the SARS outbreak is that the world community has made great progress in its ability to track and combat emerging diseases. But the outbreak also brought into stark relief a number of weaknesses in our defenses and a set of tough questions we must address. When a new disease has broken out, can we depend on all nations to share information readily and to take the necessary steps to limit the spread? What are the most effective means of containing a new disease, and what are the acceptable limits of government control? In the case of SARS, did the World Health Organization and national health authorities act fast enough to warn people of the danger, or did they go too far in some countries, provoking unnecessary panic? What social costs are we willing to pay in order to respond with the vigilance required? Do we need more disease detection at airports and other points of entry, or tougher quarantine laws? What will the ripple effects on the world economy be? And most fundamentally, how can we best determine that a new disease has appeared, and why it spreads so much more rapidly in one locale versus another?

The World Health Organization (WHO) sounded the SARS alarm on March 15, 2003, declaring the disease a worldwide health threat because it was spreading so far, so fast. In less than seven days after the first case had been identified in Hong Kong, dozens of people, many of them health care workers, had come down with it there, and patients had also been diagnosed with SARS in Hanoi, Vietnam, and in Toronto, Canada. The fact that the disease had made it all the way to North America so fast alerted the WHO that this outbreak might well become a global epidemic.

The first symptoms of the disease were fever and dry cough, and in some people muscle aches, sore throat, and diarrhea. These symptoms mimic those from influenza or the common cold, so at first patients were unaware of how serious their illness was, and many didn’t go to see a doctor. However, SARS quickly progressed to pneumonia in some patients, or caused such difficulty in breathing that doctors had to hook some up to mechanical ventilators. Those who succumbed were killed when, as in other pneumonias, the heart or other organs failed due to the stress of not getting sufficient oxygen.

More than any other recent disease, SARS traveled like wildfire because of “superspreaders,” people infected with a disease who pass it on to an inordinate number of others. In Singapore, for example, one young woman who checked into a hospital after returning from Hong Kong infected twenty nurses and patients, while two other young women who had also come back did not pass on the germ to anyone. Evidence for superspreaders is rare in history. Occasional AIDS patients and TB carriers may have fit this label, and certain people exposed to any ailment such as flu are more contagious than others, but the SARS superspreaders stood out as flagrant examples. Ironically, it was the unusual spread of SARS from a single patient to many of that same person’s doctors and nurses that first alerted the medical community this disease was different from other pneumonias. Indeed, it was the stunning specter of large numbers of hospital workers falling gravely ill in several of the treatment centers where patients were being examined that prompted the WHO to issue a global warning.

As of early May it was still unclear if the superspreaders were somehow different from other patients, or if they were just at the bad end of a spectrum of infectivity. They are a topic of great interest, but little is known yet. Do they have a differently mutated form of the virus? Are they co-infected with another virus that amplifies their contagiousness? Or are they just more susceptible to the virus because of a weak immune response, which allows the disease to proliferate that much more wildly in their bodies, so that their breath is literally saturated with virus particles? Unlike Hong Kong and Toronto, the United States was lucky that a superspreader had not traveled to the country, which is the reason so many fewer cases occurred here.

Although the news of SARS erupted on March 15, as we now know, the disease had already been coursing through southeastern China for three months but that was kept quiet by the Chinese government. Officials at the WHO who worked inside China apparently received some word about the problem, but either they were not given enough information or they reacted slowly to the snippets they did receive. The first glimmer that a truly dangerous situation was developing occurred in November 2002, when WHO officials attending a regular influenza meeting in China heard that several people in the southeastern part of the country had died from a severe pneumonia. These deaths raised a red flag, but the local analyses of virus samples from the patients showed nothing unusual about the virus.

Then in December, Hong Kong newspapers reported the deaths of wild ducks and geese at a park within the Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong. After inspectors discovered that the fowl had been infected with a flu virus, they closed the park and destroyed all the remaining birds. Officials in Hong Kong are all too familiar with the story of a 1997 outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza that killed a 6-year-old boy and prompted the slaughter of millions of chickens due to fears that an epidemic might be kicked off. When flu viruses jump from an animal to a human, they can be extraordinarily virulent. That’s why officials in Hong Kong are always on alert, especially considering the annual preponderance of flu outbreaks in the region. They felt confident that by their speedy action in this case, they had addressed the threat.

By early February 2003, however, rumors in China were spreading about more unusual human pneumonia cases, occurring in the southeastern province of Guangdong, and those rumors reached regional WHO officials. Then a local doctor told them that a 33-year-old Hong Kong man had died of an aggressive flu-like illness, and that his 8-year-old daughter had also died of pneumonia in mainland China; on top of that his son was now hospitalized too. For young children to die from pneumonia is quite unusual, and this time the WHO inspectors decided to get samples of the virus themselves for analysis. At first their test suggested that the man and his son had indeed been infected with an avian flu, just as the Hong Kong officials had suspected, and it seemed that this might be a version of the 1997 strain from Hong Kong, but subsequent tests showed that the virus was unrelated to the 1997 strain.

With that news, Hong Kong health officials, as well as WHO experts in the region, became concerned that the avian virus in Hong Kong might be related to the cases of what was being called “atypical pneumonia” that they’d been hearing about in China. They were primed to look for such connections as part of their regular surveillance of possible new influenza strains. Then suddenly, on February 10, the Xinhua News Agency, mainland China’s government-controlled news organization, published a strange announcement that an outbreak of atypical pneumonia was under control. The announcement also reported that plague and anthrax had been ruled out as causes, although it gave no explanation as to why these would have been suspected. The infectious agent causing the disease, the report said, was still unknown but was presumed to be some sort of virus, because the disease did not respond to antibiotics, which combat bacteria.

WHO officials pressed the Chinese government for more details about the outbreak. In response, the Chinese Ministry of Health informed the WHO that it had 305 cases, which included five deaths. It also mentioned, to WHO’s surprise, that the cases had been mounting since the end of 2002. Becoming really worried now about a possible bird flu outbreak, disease specialists at the WHO and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) alerted U.S. government officials. On February 20, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson, Surgeon General Richard Carmona, and the new director of the National Institutes of Health, Elias Zerhouni, urged Chinese officials to keep the rest of the world informed about the progress of the disease.

The next day Liu Jianlun, a 64-year-old respiratory disease specialist at Sun Yatsen hospital in the Guangdong province, checked into the Metropole Hotel in Hong Kong to attend a wedding. He had been treating several sick patients and didn’t feel well himself. Guests from Singapore and Toronto were staying on the same floor, as was Johnny Chen, a Chinese-American businessman based in Shanghai. Chen flew next to Hanoi, and by February 26 he was feeling extremely ill. He went to the Vietnam-France Hospital there, suffering from a high fever and a hacking cough. Doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia, but they had also heard rumors that a severe, untreatable respiratory infection was circulating among physicians in southeastern Asia, and they worried that Chen might have fallen ill with that. So the Hanoi doctors reported Chen’s condition to the regional WHO office in Manila. A veteran doctor there, Carlo Urbani, took special note of the alert, and rather than send a staff physician—the usual procedure—he decided to go himself.

Urbani, a balding 46-year-old from Italy, was an expert in human diseases caused by parasitic worms. But he was also a tireless foe of infectious diseases, and for years had hunted down pathogens that were killing legions of people in the poorest corners of the world. For a time he was head of the Italian chapter of Doctors Without Borders, and in 1999, when that organization won the Nobel Peace Prize, he said that doctors had to “stay close to victims” if they wanted to wipe out disease. Urbani practiced what he preached.

When he arrived at the Hanoi hospital he was alarmed. Chen’s fever was erratic, he wasn’t eating, he was slipping into and out of consciousness, and he needed a ventilator to breathe. Urbani immediately took blood and saliva samples. He became even more anxious over the next few days when, one by one, doctors and nurses who had contact with Chen were falling ill with the same symptoms. Clearly, whatever Chen was carrying was a highly contagious infection. Urbani urged all the hospital’s personnel to wear high-filter face masks and double-gowns, which were not routine in poor hospitals there or around the rest of the world, and told the hospital’s administrators to isolate everyone who was ill. Then he sent an urgent alert to his colleagues at WHO headquarters in Geneva.

Urbani continued to monitor Chen, and doctors tried to ease his severe pneumonia, but Chen did not improve. By March 9 dozens of the hospital’s workers had become gravely sick. Urbani and the director of the WHO Hanoi office met with Vietnamese officials and advised them to isolate patients and screen travelers arriving from Guangdong. On March 11 officials quarantined the entire hospital, and other hospitals in the area instituted strict infection-control procedures.

That same day, Urbani left on a plane for Bangkok, where he was scheduled to address a conference on the topic of deworming schoolchildren. But before he departed he called ahead to a fellow WHO doctor there to say that he was feeling ill himself. An American disease expert who was on assignment for the WHO in Bangkok went to the airport to pick him up. Urbani, feverish and ragged-looking, warned his colleague to keep his distance, and the colleague insisted Urbani get help, and brought him to a city hospital.

Urbani’s condition was the last straw for WHO leaders, who had been monitoring developments surrounding the mystery illness for three weeks now. Part of the WHO mission is to act as the central clearinghouse for information about outbreaks around the globe, from Ebola and cholera to flu and TB. Member states, which include most nations, are supposed to forward breaking health information, especially about infectious diseases, to the WHO so that it can monitor all potential outbreaks. At this point the WHO realized that too many people in too many places in southeastern Asia were coming down with the same serious condition. The WHO alerted its Global Outbreak and Response Network, an international coalition of 100 national governments and scientific institutions that have expertise in infectious diseases. The mandate: Scour every bit of medical and media information about anything even remotely related to what was already known, and check samples from patients to figure out what was going on.

Then, on March 13, WHO officials got some truly troubling news. Doctors in Toronto reported that a 43-year-old man, Tse Chi Kwan, had just died of intractable pneumonia. The chilling detail was that his mother, Sui-Chu Kwan, who lived with him and his wife, had died at their home of the same illness one week earlier—right after flying back from the Metropole Hotel in Hong Kong. She had stayed in the same place as Johnny Chen and Liu Jianlun. The very same afternoon, Chen died of respiratory failure in Asia.

If that wasn’t bad enough, nurses who had treated Kwan at a Toronto hospital were getting sick, repeating the pattern that had occurred in Hanoi. And German officials had just intercepted a plane during a stopover in Frankfurt to hustle off a 32-year-old doctor who was on board. The doctor had treated patients with similar symptoms in Singapore, and had then attended a medical conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. He, his wife, and his mother—all on the same plane—now had high fevers and rough coughs. WHO’s global network was picking up all these reports and plotting a map of deadly infection on three continents. The mystery illness was quickly jetting around the world.

The WHO’s analysis had been unusually quick. Widely criticized for its slow response to the AIDS epidemic a decade earlier, the WHO had made improvements. To a large extent the organization had always been, and still was, concerned primarily with chronic scourges like TB, malaria, and cholera, which require a well-planned, long-term response. The exception was influenza, which WHO monitored relentlessly. Was this new infectious disease in the same category? Top WHO officials, including David Heymann, the executive director of communicable diseases, called for an emergency teleconference of WHO officials and leaders from national health agencies such as the CDC. The group would have to decide if this new menace was truly a global threat—and if so, how to respond. Heymann would host the meeting from Geneva on Saturday morning, March 15.

Within hours, Julie Gerberding, director of the CDC, convened that agency’s own infectious-disease experts at its brand-new Marcus Emergency Operations Center, a 7,000-square-foot bunker at CDC headquarters in Atlanta. The center had been quickly built after the anthrax attacks, when staffers found themselves communicating with nothing more than standard telephones and pagers. The center wasn’t even officially opened yet, but it had been equipped with 85 workstations, nine team rooms, and a secure, state-of-the-art command station sporting high-frequency telecommunications networks and geographic disease-mapping systems. The technology assembled in this facility would enable Gerberding to communicate in real-time with the Department of Health and Human Services, federal intelligence and emergency response officials, and state and local public health officials, creating an ad hoc network among such groups that otherwise did not usually coordinate.

When WHO contacts from around the world met in Geneva on Saturday, March 15, they brought with them as much local intelligence as they could. Their reports revealed that the mystery illness was highly contagious—it was infecting so many people so quickly in Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, and Toronto that it must be spreading by simple close contact—people coughing or sneezing on one another. And it had hopped continents so easily that people must remain contagious for some time, meaning travelers could spread the pathogen far and wide. WHO officials issued a statement right after the meeting ended saying that the illness was a “worldwide health threat”—a pronouncement WHO had never made at the outset of any new disease, not even AIDS. The representatives at the meeting also came up with a name for the mystery illness: “severe acute respiratory syndrome,” which was quickly shortened to SARS.

Disturbing
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
In this disturbing new book, authors Mark Fischetti and Dr. Elinor Levy look at the recent trends in the evolution of germs and demonstrate the threat that they represent to all of humanity. Beginning with the recent advent of SARS, the book examines a plethora of naturally occurring pathogens, and how they have changed since the post-World War 2 years, when antibiotics seemed to represent the ultimate victory of man over disease. Increasingly, doctors have found that familiar (and treatable) pathogens are returning in new forms that are more deadly than those seen before, and are increasingly immune to existing medical treatment.

This is not a book for the complacent. In this book, the authors are sounding an alarm at recent trends, and are recommending quick action in the war between humans and germs. The book is crammed full of stories of the effects of the newer generations of diseases, and will shock and disturb anyone who doesn't take them seriously.

But, the book is not primarily sensationalistic, but instead treats the topic as a serious subject that must be explained to the lay reader. Indeed, at times the authors are quite optimistic, informing the reader of new and developing fields of immunology that promise whole new fronts being opened up in the war against germs. So, if you are interested in the present trends in medicine and diseases, then I would highly recommend this book to you. Indeed, if you have heard tales of SARS and Mad Cow Disease, and want to know what's going on, then you must get this book!

romántica, reflexiva, muy concentrada; una historia que cautiva y engancha
By Amazon Customer

The Tableau manual is better
By Jonathan Drummey
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the ebook in exchange for promising to review the book. I'm also writing a Tableau book myself, though it is targeted at more advanced users.

I cannot honestly recommend this book in its current form. I think most every reader is better off with the Tableau manual, which even though it has its own issues is still 1) free, 2) more complete, and 3) more accurate.

Here is a list of specific issues with the Tableau Data Visualization Cookbook in its initial release:

- The section on dimensions and measures is woefully incomplete. Other than mentioning that dimensions usually generate headers, it does not go into how dimension vs. measure changes how aggregation happens. Also, the book does not cover continuous vs. discrete at all, the only mention is deep into the book during the section on color palettes. Understanding the combinations of dimension vs. measure, continuous (green) vs. discrete (blue) is critical to being able to take advantage of Tableau's features.

- The section on scatterplots does not talk about using size, color, transparency to deal with marks that are drawn on top of one another, never mind more advanced techniques such as aggregation or jittering. I believe this is necessary to address for using Tableau as a tool for visual analysis.

- The section on Measure Names/Measure Values does not include the key shortcut of right-clicking to drag out a pill and then choosing the aggregation. This is much faster than what is described in the book.

- The date aggregation section has no discussion of choosing the date part and date value (aka datetrunc) aggregations and how they are different, and how they can be converted from continuous to discrete, and the effects on the visualization. This is a key early question users have when they do things like expand the YEAR(Date) pill into Quarter and Months and want to get rid of the line breaks that Tableau adds.

- The facets/panel charts/small multiples section does not mention that this kind of arrangement requires one to have discrete headers (created by dimensions or discrete aggregates) to make the layout possible. It also doesn't discuss the limitations of panel charts in Tableau.

- The dual axis chart recipe doesn't talk about how to hide the secondary axis once it's customized, and the screenshot (at least on the Kindle edition) doesn't even show secondary axis. Also, a not-uncommon question is "Why can't I synchronize the axes?" - which happens when one axis has an integer and the other a float, I believe the book should have addressed that as well.

- The Gantt bars recipe directs the user to put YEAR(Date) and MONTH(Date) on the Filters shelf, there are at least 3 other options that would let the user use a single date filter and be more efficient. For example, using the MY(Date), using the range selector for the date value version of MONTH(Date), or using date value/datetrunc version of MONTH(Date) as a discrete. This recipe has 13 steps, with no explanation of why those steps are needed. I mention this because Gantt Bars use the Size Shelf to set the length of the bar, unlike most Bar marks, which can be confusing to users.

- The map section isn't too bad, however there is no mention of dual axis maps.

- The book barely touches on the difference between row level and aggregate calcs, and has no mention of the most common error new users of calculated fields see - the "Cannot mix aggregate and non-aggregate calculations" message, nor how to fix (and avoid) that problem.

- The Grand Totals section does not describe how the aggregations of grand totals are a separate computation. So instead of an average of the displayed values, Tableau is averaging the underlying data. This is a very common question for users.

- The table calculation section does not describe the other options for relative compute using (such as Pane), and has no mention at all of fixed compute using.

- The color section does not have screen shots of continuous/discrete color choices. Writing about colors is like dancing about architecture. In addition, it uses the term "Color box" instead of the Tableau term, which is "Color Shelf."

- The formatting section states that the Tableau default format is widely usable. This is not true at all when the output is for print or for putting up on a projector. The default font size in Tableau is 8pt, which is too small for most print situations and definitely true for projected visualizations.

- There are three pages on setting up dashboards, with no mention of layout containers, sizing dashboards or worksheets, and using floating vs. fixed layouts.

Having made a list of specific issues, here are more general impressions:

- The recipes are about using Tableau to build specific charts. In most cases, there is no discussion of why the given steps are necessary, and there is often no mention of potential complications or workarounds that users may run into.

- The book has nearly nothing on the cycle of visual analysis, which is one of the key features of Tableau. A user who reads this book will think of Tableau as a chart builder and not have more of a sense of how it can answer questions in new ways.

- For a book about a visualization tool, there are far too few screenshots for the number of instructions.

- Since Tableau has a focus on bringing "data democracy," I believe an introductory level book needs to talk more about what a usable data source is for analysis and what isn't, and how to get to an analytics-ready data source.

My hope is that there will be a 2nd edition at some point that would correct these deficiencies, until then I will steer users away from this book. If a 2nd edition comes out, I'd be glad to update my review.

Too basic, no depth at all
By Koen Verbeeck
The book is way too basic and this because of the overly simplistic recipes. There are 74 recipes in about 150 pages, so almost 1 recipe per 2 pages. Clearly an example of quantity over quality. Get this book only if you are an absolute beginner in Tableau and have never read anything about this tool or if you are an absolute novice in data visualizations tools.

Good for new/beginning users
By J. Chang
DISCLAIMER - I received a free copy of this book for review purposes. I was not asked to write a positive review in return, just that I write a fair review. Review begins below:

I consider myself a middling Tableau user. I am comfortable with its basics but have not yet mastered the heights of the product (complex table calcs, windowing functions, complex parameters and the like). I have taken the Tableau advanced course and have attended one user conference. I am certified in the Desktop product. Thus, I am reviewing this book from the perspective of someone trying to take that next step to advanced Tableau knowledge.

This book is set up as a step-by-step walkthrough of common Tableau activities. Thus, it starts with the basics of how to connect to a variety of data sources to building your first one-dimensional vizes to multidimensional vizes. Just about every type of standard viz is covered in these step-by-step approaches. One of the great things I liked about the book was that each section had a "How It Works" section describing at a high level what the steps actually do and a "There's More" section which provides a quick note containing additional information about the technique described. These quick notes could be pointers to Tableau's help file or to external blogs/web sites where the reader could learn more. These references are fairly up to date and comprise a top list of great Tableau references.

If you are relatively new to Tableau, this book is a nice reference to help you remember how to do something you might have gone through in class or watched on Tableau's web site. I found a few chapters that served as a nice refresher for some things I hadn't done in quite some time. It also does a nice job of walking through how to create your own custom calculated fields.

If you are an advanced user, there is nothing in this book that you will not have already known and there is not much in terms of things that will stretch your knowledge. Unfortunately, that is pretty much the state of Tableau printed references - it's nice to see that Tableau is getting popular enough to warrant reference books, but there just isn't anyone addressing the higher levels of functionality. I'd love to see one or more of the Tableau Zen Masters collaborating on an advanced functionality book because I think those guys have a ton of knowledge that lots of Tableau users would benefit from. But a book like that might be another year or so off in the horizon.

Few books on Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) have the elegant geometric insight of this one, which puts emphasis on the qualitative and geometric properties of ODEs and their solutions, rather than on routine presentation of algorithms.

Review

A fresh modern approach to the geometric qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations...suitable for advanced undergraduates and some graduate students. The notions of vector field, phase space, phase flow, and one parameter groups of transformations dominate the entire presentation. The author is acutely aware of the pitfalls of this abstract approach (e.g., putting the reader to sleep) and does a brilliant job of presenting only the most essential ideas with an easily grasped notation, a minimum formalism, and very careful motivation.

(Technometrics)

This college-level textbook treats the subject of ordinary differential equations in an entirely new way. A wealth of topics is presented masterfully, accompanied by many thought-provoking examples, problems, and 259 figures. The author emphasizes the geometrical and intuitive aspects and at the same time familiarizes the student with concepts, such as flows and manifolds and tangent bundles, traditionally not found in textbooks of this level. The exposition is guided by applications taken mainly from mechanics. One can expect this book to bring new life into this old subject.

excellent, 1st of 2 english versions
By A Customer
Be aware there are 2 versions of this book
available in English; this one from MIT press
is (contrary to one of the reviews above) is
translated from the *first* Russian edition;
there is another version from Springer-Verlag
translated from the *third* Russian edition.
They're translated by different people so
some wording etc is different but otherwise
they're similar, though not identical. The
later edition has some reworked passages
and modest amount of new material, but it's
not a hugely different book.
Both are excellent, are are all the other
books & papers I've seen by V.I. Arnol'd.

A beauty; a struggle
By Raman
This has to be one of the most amazing math books I've ever read. Arnol'd seems to do the impossible here - he blends abstract theory with an intuitive exposition while avoiding any tendency to become verbose. By the end of Arnol'd, it's hard not to have a deep understanding of the way that ODEs and their solutions behave.
Arnol'd accomplishes this feat through an intense parsimony of words and topics. Everything in this book builds on the central theme of the relations between vector fields and one-parameter groups of diffeomorphisms, and the topics are illustrated (and often motivated) almost exclusively through problems in classical mechanics, most notably the plane pendulum. Almost no solution techniques are given in this book - expect no mention of integrating factors or Bessel functions. One of the main reasons that the book does so much without bogging down is that the mathematical formalism is minimal and terse - proofs are often one or two lines long, merely mentioning the conceptual justification of a result without detailed, formal constructions.
But the result of this parsimony is that Arnol'd is a very difficult book. To understand every detail and to be able to attempt every problem, I think, basically requires a math degree - lots of linear algebra (for his monumental 116-page chapter on linear systems), a solid background in analysis and topology, and a bit of differential geometry and abstract algebra are prerequsites for a full understanding. (I found the section on the "topological classification of singular points," in particular, nearly incomprehensible with my thin chemistry-major math background.) There are foibles, too, including proofs that satisfy the requirements for some theorem or definition without actually stating what theorem or definition is now applicable. One can detect some mild arrogance in places (after an arduous two-page proof, he mentions "As always in proving obvious theorems, it is easier to carry out the proof of the extension theorem than to read through it.") Also, a few typos can be found here and there, which sometimes result in confusion.
One very curious thing about Arnol'd is that my most brilliant math-major friends find it impenetrable, whereas I know biologists who got through it with no problem. So I guess that, for a mere mortal, reading Arnol'd demands a willingness to have a feel for a big picture without worrying about every epsilon and delta.
So grab a copy of this book, let it flow, and learn about ODEs. It's well worth the effort.

wow! differential equations made appealing
By mathwonk
I had always hated d.e.'s until this book made me see the geometry. And I have only read a few pages.

I never realized before that the existence and uniqueness theorem defines an equivalence relation on the compact manifold, where two points are equivalent iff they lie on the same flow curve. This instantly renders a d.e. visible, and not just some ugly formulas.

He also made me understand for the first time the proof of Reeb's theorem that a compact manifold with a function having only 2 critical points is a sphere. If they are non degenerate at least, the proof is simple. Each critical point has a nbhd looking like a disc. In between, the lack of critical points means there is a one parameter flow from the boundary circle of one disc to the other, i.e. thus the in between stuff is a cylinder.

Hence gluing a disc into each end of a cylinder gives a sphere! It also makes it clear why the sphere may have a non standard differentiable structure, because the diff. structure depends on how you glue in the discs.

What a book. I bought the cheaper older version, thanks to a reviewer here, and I love it. No other book gives me the geometry this forcefully and quickly. Of course I am a mathematician so the vector field and manifold language are familiar to me. But I guess this is a great place for beginners to learn it.

One tiny remark. He does not mind "deceiving you" in the sense of making plausible statements that are actually deep theorems in mathematics to prove. E.g. the fact that in a rectangle it is impossible to join two pairs of opposite corners by continuous curves that do not intersect, is non trivial to prove.

Hence the staement on page 2 that the problem is "solved" merely by introducing the phase plane, is not strictly true, until you prove the intersection statement above. All the phase plane version does for me is render the problem's solution highly plausible, and show the way to solving it. You still have to do it. But it was huge fun thiunking up a fairly elementary winding number argument for this fact.

Good teachers know how to deceive you instructively by making plausible statements that a beginner is willing to accept. I presume a physicist, e.g., would not quarrel with the statement above about curves intersecting.

This is the best differential, equaitons book I know of if you want to understand what they are, as opposed to learn to calculate canned solution fornmulas for special ones. He even makes clear what it is that is special about the special ones, e.g. linear equations are nice not just because the solutions are familiar exponential functions, but because the flow curves exist for all time,...

Brings the Band Structure of Carbon-Based Devices into the Limelight

A shift to carbon is positioning biology as a process of synthesis in mainstream engineering. Silicon is quickly being replaced with carbon-based electronics, devices are being reduced down to nanometer scale, and further potential applications are being considered. While traditionally, engineers are trained by way of physics, chemistry, and mathematics, Nanoelectronics: Quantum Engineering of Low-Dimensional Nanoensembles establishes biology as an essential basic science for engineers to explore.

Unifies Science and Engineering: from Quantum Physics to Nanoengineering

Drawing heavily on published papers by the author, this research-driven text offers a complete review of nanoelectronic transport starting from quantum waves, to ohmic and ballistic conduction, and saturation-limited extreme nonequilibrium conditions. In addition, it highlights a new paradigm using non-equilibrium Arora’s Distribution Function (NEADF) and establishes this function as the starting point (from band theory to equilibrium to extreme nonequilibrium carrier statistics). The author focuses on nano-electronic device design and development, including carbon-based devices, and provides you with a vantage point for the global outlook on the future of nanoelectronics devices and ULSI.

Encompassing ten chapters, this illuminating text:

  • Converts the electric-field response of drift velocity into current–voltage relationships that are driven by the presence of critical voltage and saturation current arising from the unidirectional drift of carriers
  • Applies the effect of these scaled-down dimensions to nano-MOSFET (metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor)
  • Considers specialized applications that can be tried through a number of suggested projects that are all feasible with MATLAB® codes

Nanoelectronics: Quantum Engineering of Low-Dimensional Nanoensembles contains the latest research in nanoelectronics, identifies problems and other factors to consider when it comes to nanolayer design and application, and ponders future trends.
