About the Author
William Pride (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is a professor of marketing in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. In addition to this text, he is co-author of a market-leading Principles of Marketing text. Dr. Pride's research interests include advertising, promotion, and distribution channels, and his research articles have appeared in major professional journals, such as the JOURNAL OF MARKETING, the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, the JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE, and the JOURNAL OF ADVERTISING. Dr. Pride is a member of the American Marketing Association, Academy of Marketing Science, Society for Marketing Advances, and the Marketing Management Association. He has received the Marketing Fellow Award from the Society of Marketing Advances and the Marketing Innovation Award from the Marketing Management Association. Both of these are lifetime achievement awards.

Robert J. Hughes (PhD, University of North Texas) specializes in business administration and college instruction. He has taught Introduction to Business for more than 35 years both on campus and online for Richland College, one of seven campuses that is part of the Dallas County Community College District. In addition to BUSINESS and FOUNDATIONS OF BUSINESS, published by Cengage Learning, he has authored college textbooks in personal finance and business mathematics; served as a content consultant for two popular national television series, "It's Strictly Business" and "Dollars & Sense: Personal Finance for the 21st Century"; and is the lead author for a business math project utilizing computer-assisted instruction funded by the ALEKS Corporation. He also is active in many academic and professional organizations and has served as a consultant and investment adviser to individuals, businesses, and charitable organizations. Dr. Hughes is the recipient of three different Teaching in Excellence Awards at Richland College. According to Dr. Hughes, after 35 years of teaching Introduction to Business, the course is still exciting: "There's nothing quite like the thrill of seeing students succeed, especially in a course like Introduction to Business, which provides the foundation for not only academic courses, but also life in the real world."

Jack R. Kapoor (EdD, Northern Illinois University) is professor of business and economics in the Business and Technology Division at the College of DuPage, where he has taught Introduction to Business, Marketing, Management, Economics, and Personal Finance since 1969. He previously taught at Illinois Institute of Technology's Stuart School of Management, San Francisco State University's School of World Business, and other colleges. Professor Kapoor was awarded the Business and Services Division's Outstanding Professor Award for 1999-2000. He served as an Assistant National Bank Examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department and as an international trade consultant to Bolting Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Mumbai, India. Dr. Kapoor is known internationally as a coauthor of several textbooks, including FOUNDATIONS OF BUSINESS, 4E (Cengage Learning); has served as a content consultant for the popular national television series "The Business File: An Introduction to Business"; and developed two full-length audio courses in business and personal finance. He has been quoted in many national newspapers and magazines, including USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, the Chicago Sun-Times, Crain's Small Business, the Chicago Tribune, and other publications. Dr. Kapoor has traveled around the world and has studied business practices in capitalist, socialist, and communist countries.

but it looks like a blurry scan of the book and every page ...

The Kindle version is more expensive than the print version. The Kindle rental costs more than the Kindle purchase. Is this supposed to be some crazy lesson in business to the suckers who have to buy this book for school? At least it is a crystal clear version of the book. The publisher lets your rent etext of the book for very cheap, but it looks like a blurry scan of the book and every page is watermarked. It gave me a headache to read it. Spend the extra $30 and buy it here.

Easy to Read and Understand

I'm only a few chapters in so far, but I'm really enjoying the textbook so far. The writing, layout, and real-world examples make it quite easy for me to read and digest. I really like that the jargon is all clearly defined in the margins, because it makes taking notes much more simple. Some of my other textbooks only contain definitions in the very back of the book, requiring me to spend quite a bit more time putting together my notes.

Save your money!

Bought the book based on reviews. While I love the subject matter and agree with much of the content (which is very basic and very limited in scope) it's basically an ad for a website. The "book" only takes about 7 minutes to read, but paying to read a sales pitch made me feel ripped off. There is much better stuff out there for less.

Good book. Excellent introduction. Basic if you already know a lot about the subject.

It boils down to these three keys:

Step 1: Ask
Step 2: Believe you have already received it.
Step 3: It will be yours

Because the focus is on the subconscious mind, the goal, then is to program or condition the subconscious mind. The basic idea is to use affirmations. In this case, they suggest their product: Mind Movies.

The concept behind Mind Movies is elegant and simple: Create a digital dream board and affirmation list, and then run it on your computer all day. It is a foreground or background fade, run so lightly you can barely see it, so you can still do your regular work. Since we’re at our computers so much, it is a way to basically let your subconscious stream on your dream board without interruption while your conscious mind is otherwise occupied doing your work and everything else we do on our computers.

I've never used Mind Movies myself, but from what I know of it, the product sounds excellent. For those interested in such things, it would be something I might recommend.

Thank you for this very interesting book! I can recommend it to anyone, even when (like in my case) english is not yr mothertongue. After finishing it, I started right away to practice your guidelines. It already has helped me a lot and I'm sure it will keep on doing so as I've incorporated it in my daily routine. The development of energy law is becoming an urgent and expanding substantive law area in its own right having been long associated with the overall concepts of environmental law. We welcome the excellent new work from Edward Elgar Publishing Limited entitled “Carbon Pricing” which is a new volume in their “Critical Issues in Environmental Taxation” series.

Six people have edited this publication which comments on and expands the continuing and constructive global debate taking place on the price of energy in a legal, taxation and economic context.

The editors investigate the best models to design carbon pricing and the ways to utilize the financial outcomes in the best possible way to benefit society. The global community continues to witness a significant downward adjustment in the costs of fossil fuels as prices continue to fluctuate. The issues the editors identify are considered by some as possible negative implications for the future of our environment thus highlighting contemporary environmental and energy law issues.

So, with the serious implications of these negative developments across the world, it’s now emerging as a fundamental consideration for legal academics to comprehend and evaluate the benefits of a continued environmental sustainability by well-documented research. Long (Year Zero, etc.) delivers a suspenseful, tightly written tale of a nightmarish journey into the dark past—and present—of Cambodia's former killing fields. Molly Drake, a would-be photojournalist, accompanies a U.S. Army-led search for the bones of a pilot shot down during the war. She meets Duncan O'Brian, an archeologist at a local dig, and John Kleat, who has come back to the country repeatedly, seeking his brother's remains. When bones unexpectedly turn up, Molly photographs them, breaking her agreement with the army not to take pictures of bodies. The captain in charge dismisses her along with O'Brian and Kleat, and the trio make their way to an ancient, fog-enshrouded Angkor-like city where they have evidence an army patrol went missing years ago. They soon find themselves lost in a labyrinth of ancient stone, in circumstances that quickly grow as dire as those in which the patrol evidently found itself. Long's considerable knowledge of Cambodian folklore and history is put to good use as he superbly depicts the war-scarred country, its people and its beautiful, hazardous landscape—lush, verdant, strewn with land mines, studded by bones. Although the inner lives of the characters are not as detailed as they could have been, the author's use of supernatural elements is subtle and effective, and adds an extra dimension to this solid, coolly told, smoothly paced narrative.

A dark and surreal trip into the timeless heart of Cambodia

Jeff Long has a talent for not just painting a location with his words, but painting the actual feeling of the surroundings, drawing out in literary fashion the overwhelming mysticism and dread that permeate the very fabric of his physical realms.

Free lance journalist Molly Drake, on assignment for her big break with the Times, travels to modern day Cambodia to photograph and report on the U.S. Military's efforts to excavate the site of a plane crash back in the 1970's, hoping to find the remains of the pilot.

She joins the team, along with two other civilians, an archeologist named Duncan O'Brian who specializes in temple restorations, and John Kleat, a development contractor who makes annual pilgrimages to Cambodia in hopes of finding the remains of his long lost brother. She also meets an old, one-legged Khmer named Samnang who is the work boss on the excavation site.

She spends a month with the RE-1 unit, enchanted by the strange morning people who wander through the early mists, and by an odd gypsy boy who skirts the site like a feral dog. But when she finds American remains in a deep well, she and the other civilians are evicted from the site and sent home. While having dinner at a local restaurant with Duncan and Kleat, the gypsy boy shows up with American dog tags and says he can lead them to the burial site. Taking Samnang and three local brothers, the three set off to find out if what the gypsy boy promised was true.

A long drive through the night, past a strange rain of tiny frogs, they discover ancient ruins buried deep inside the Cambodian forest, primitive and eerie, dating far before any of the ruins Duncan has studied. Conflict begins immediately, with Kleat insisting their focus be on uncovering the missing men, Duncan wanting to explore the strange city, and the locals hired by Samnang wanting to plunder the relics.

It doesn't take long to discover that there is something strangely alive about this ancient place, and Molly is determined to find out what it is, in spite of the rising tensions and the threat from both a typhoon and the upcoming monsoons. She will uncover more than her story here, finding answers to her quest for her real parents and to the strange behaviors of her companions.

Just as Long did with his previous work, `The Descent', he is able to paint a mystical atmosphere that literally comes alive with its creeping mists, sultry humidity, aggressive growth, and mystical ruins that crouch under the canopy of the lush jungles. I could feel the atmosphere, the sense of urgency, the dread, and the excitement that pulls Molly deep into mysterious puzzle of the missing soldiers and the city itself.

Jeff Long is proving himself to be one of my favorite authors, someone I can compare to Michael Crichton with his ability to make me grab up a hardcopy the minute it is released. Enjoy!

Good Old-Fashioned Thrills

When I read The Reckoning, I was impressed. Jeff Long is always to my taste, but with this book he hits a stride. There are fewer story threads than usual (usual for the detail-oriented Long, that is)and the result is a very readable, taut book that still contains plenty of plot. His characters are likable and the adventure into jungle ruins is eerie and fascinating.

Long creates compelling imagery, beautiful or horrifying, and, as always, there's an impending sense of the paranormal to his words, an air of more surrounding the characters than they can see or fathom. This author understands that what we don't see is more frightening than what we do. . . And whether or not something anomalous exists within any Long book is irrelevant. His style haunts.

For me, The Reckoning is the most satisfying of his books. It gave me what I crave most and I didn't even see it coming. When that happens, it's time to eat that cake, not just have it.

But wait, there's more! The cherry on top: I finished The Reckoning and immediately read Scott Smith's much-touted The Ruins. Essentially, it's the same story, but The Reckoning absolutely blows The Ruins out of the water. While The Ruins is a page-turner, it doesn't satisfy and it's difficult to care if the characters live or die. The Reckoning is a good old-fashioned science/adventure thriller with three-dimensional characters to care about. That's what works for me.

These Bones Are Made For The Reckoning

After reading Jeff Long's last book, "Year Zero", I ordered this book right away. Jeff Long has the ability to fuse the natural and supernatural without going over the top, but still capture the reader's imagination. Once again he has successfully pulled off another exciting book in "The Reckoning"!

At first, I was a little leery about this book. The subject matter of recovering soldier remains in Cambodia, didn't seem all that interesting to me, until I started reading futher in the book. I was so engaged in the book during my night time reading, I wouldn't get to sleep until 1 or 2 in the morning.

This was an excellent book to read. The last few chapters of the book kind of reminded me of the movie, "Sixth Sense", if you enjoyed that movie, you will enjoy this book.

A los 12 anos se mudo nuevamente a la ciudad de Usulutan, en donde se graduo de la secundaria en el Instituto nacional Usuluteco . . . contaba con apenas 17 anos, pero su inquietud por el estudio lo hizo ingresar a la Universidad autónoma de El Salvador, en San Salvador, donde curso solo 2 anos, pues ganaba una beca para estudiar en el continente Europeo, oportunidad que no quiso perder, para conocer otras culturas. En el viejo continente estuvo 5 anos, donde aprovecho sus vacaciones de verano para ir a trabajar y conocer Francia, Belgica, Alemania, Suecia, Grecia Y Polonia. A su regreso a su país natal, se avecinaba la sangrienta guerra civil que hubo entre militares y fuerzas de izquierda, por esa razón no pudo establecese all y en 1975 decidio emigrar a los EEUU. Llego ilegalmernte a este pais, pero por una ley aprobada por el Ex presidente Ronald Reagan pudo obtener su residencia permanente para pos- teriormente hacerse ciudadano NorteAmericano. About the Author

Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Great writing, bad digital edition

Wells writes so eloquently and passionately of his belief that WW1 really was the last war humanity would fight. Sadly, history has shown that not to be the case. Wells cautions about how the victory terms will be just as vital as the fighting itself to prevent another conflict. Wish the folks at Versailles in 1919 had read this.....
This Kindle version is full of typos, extra characters, random pageheadings and line breaks. Might be acceptable in a free or 99 cent version but for 5.99 I have higher expectations.
