Dialogue balloons and Degen's colorful cartoon illustrations add humor. The book makes a complex subject fun to read about and simple to understand. It's bound to be a hit with the series' many fans.?Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA

From Kirkus Reviews
The indomitable Ms. Frizzle is back for a lesson in electricity in this entertaining entry in the Magic School Bus series. The class begins with books, videos, experiments, and research reports; Ms. Frizzle, wearing a dress of geometric shapes, explains atoms and electrons, and, during an electrical storm, gets the students and her niece, Dottie, into the school bus to find out what's behind a power blackout. At a power plant, they learn how electricity is generated and how it travels. As in the other books in the series, this one doesn't cover everything, but it will stimulate interest; plenty of information is packed into the pages, and repeat readings are mandatory. Watt a Positively Charged Exploration!
By Children's Book Review
It is more than obvious that Joanna Cole (author) and Bruce Degen (illustrator) had the time of their lives bringing this book to fruition. Penned in 1997, "The Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip" is packaged to the bursting point with anything and everything that has to do with electricity. There's so much going on here that a simple one-sided scorecard just won't suffice upon delving into Ms. Frizzle's latest adventure. It is Cole and Degen's most action-packed and tightly-woven collaboration yet. One senses from just taking in the first few pages that author and illustrator poured every fiber of their being into the Friz's ninth science-related field trip for children.

Our story starts off with a bang when a surprise guest bounces into class, positively charged with energy. She looks to be the spitting-image of Ms. Frizzle, only much younger.

"Hello, Aunt Valerie," says the girl, kissing the Friz on the cheek.

"My niece, Dottie Frizzle, is visiting today," adds Ms. Frizzle. "Dottie, we're learning about electricity!"

And so, while a thunderstorm rages on outside, our favorite frizzy-haired teacher begins her lesson for the day. She starts by breaking down a diagram of an atom. Then she points out the relationship between electrons (tiny parts of the atom that circle around its core) and electric current (where electrons are pulled away from their hosts and form a steady stream of movement). This is what gives us electricity.

Then, before the Friz can move onto magnetic current (the cousin of electric current), the lights all over school suddenly go out and the classroom is plunged into total darkness. Outside, a hearty roar of thunder echoes over the students' heads.

"There's no electricity!" someone yells.

"We're experiencing a blackout," notes Ms. Frizzle. And according to Gregory, a student in the class, a blackout happens when electric current stops flowing from the power plant to the community.

Why has this occurred? What can anyone do about it? Will this be the end of our story?

"To the bus, everyone!" orders the Friz, brandishing her trusty umbrella like a valiant knight's sword. "Let's find out what happened."

And so begins the wildest adventure Ms. Frizzle and her students have ever undertaken, one that will start at the heart of a power plant and, zooming along with millions of electrons, lead them all over town -- the library, Jo's Diner, student Phoebe's house, and back to school again.

Readers and students alike will learn all about electricity; its many uses, how it is made, and the safety hazards of working with it. They will come to understand the very important role magnetism plays in producing large amounts of electricity. They will familiarize themselves with terms such as "transformers" and "volts."

And that is only scratching the surface of this most densely-packed field trip to date. It would be hard for any author-illustrator team to keep upping the ante nine books into a series. But Cole and Degen prove themselves just as fresh and inspired as ever. "Electric Field Trip" will require second readings to fully grasp all the concepts presented in this book, which Cole and Degen fully acknowledge within the story. Electricity, atoms, watts, magnetism -- it's highly sophisticated and complicated material, even for the most advanced readers. And the fact that Cole and Degen plowed full steam ahead with the subject matter without batting an eyelash is to be commended. Readers will most certainly be rewarded for the time they spend poring over this book.

In keeping with tradition, Cole and Degen leave readers with two familiar mainstays at the end of the tale. Clearly explained are the things made up for story purposes. What's nicer is that Cole and Degen have added a new twist this time around, which makes distinguishing fact from fiction in the story more enjoyable than ever. And then there is the enticingly sweet tidbit to leave readers with a sampling of what's next in store for the Friz and her posse. It's hard to put a finger on what it could be, exactly . . . but one senses that it will quench your thirst for knowledge, you hear?

As Ms. Frizzle herself would say, "If there's no flow, then it's no go!"

Best of the whole series
By Lawrence M. Sanger
The Magic School Bus is a great series and, having read most of the original books, I think this may be the best in the series. It covers the generation, transmission, and usage of electricity in an unusually accessible, interesting, amusing way. It fostered my preschooler's rather surprising and alarming interest in electricity (of course the book covers safety too). We've looked at quite a few books for younger children about electricity, and this was the best we found.

A Creative and Accessible Lesson in Electricity
By Shanna A. Gonzalez
This story begins with an ordinary public-school class who have an extraordinary teacher. On their field trip to an electric power plant, Ms. Frizzle, Mary Poppins-like, shrinks the class to the size of electrons and they magically travel through the plant and into power lines, through light bulbs and into everyday appliances. In the course of this journey, they learn how electricity is generated and used for different purposes. The story is told with creativity, humor, and a level of detail that is appropriate for the target audience.

Because the topic of electricity is more complex than some of the other Magic School Bus topics, it may be better to read aloud all the sidebar text and conversations, not just the primary narrative text. Introduction of this slightly more advanced book may need to wait a year or so later than other books in the series. As I've said before, I recommend only the original books in this series, not the derivative ones based on the TV program.

Outstanding explanation to Lean Mapping
By jeff westerkamm
Strategic Lean Mapping can be seen as a very confusing and complicated process if you are not familiar with the process. Like myself, being new to the whole idea, I was intimidated by the idea of actually having to Map out processes. With the help of this very easy to read and understand book, I now feel very confident in the fact that I can not only perform the process of lean mapping but have actually began to teach others within our organization about Lean Mapping. I found this book very easy to understand and the reading is great because it is not written at a level that is hard for the average person to comprehend. The ideas and the concept is laid out in a very precise but simple way by the author. I would recommend anyone wishing to become more familiar with Lean Mapping read this book!!! You will not be dissappointed with your purchase.

The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements, where you’re restricted to 2,000 calories of badly flavored soy every day.

You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world, or you can join the service.

With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth. But as he starts a career of supposed privilege, he soon learns that the good food and decent health care come at a steep price...and that the settled galaxy holds far greater dangers than military bureaucrats or the gangs that rule the slums.

The debut novel from Marko Kloos, Terms of Enlistment is a new addition to the great military sci-fi tradition of Robert Heinlein, Joe Haldeman, and John Scalzi.

Review
“Military science fiction is tricky because it either intends to lampoon the military industrial complex or paints it in such a way that you must really have to love guns to enjoy the work. Terms of Enlistment walks that fine line by showing a world where the military is one of the few viable options off a shattered Earth and intermixes it with a knowledge of military tactics and and weapons that doesn’t turn off the casual reader.” —Buzzfeed.com

“Much like Scalzi's Old Man's War and its sequels, Terms of Enlistment and Lines of Departure are combat-grade Military SF, and should come with an addiction warning.” —io9.com

Echos of Heinlein and Huxley
By AM
This book is extremely readable and engaging. I finished it quickly and felt disappointed that it ended and I am hoping for this to grow into a series. The book is a classic "Hero's Journey" storyline, and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed "Starship Troopers" and noted a lot of the differences. Instead of Heinlein's "Citizen/Civilian" political dynamic that led to an almost "utopia" found in the classic "Starship Troopers" we find the results of generational welfare taken to the logical conclusion as the base setting for "Terms of Enlistment." The grit, dirt, and ugliness of the socialist dole life remind me of Huxley's "Brave New World" in dealing with the underclass. But the book is not about economics or politics, those settings are only there to explain the rational of characters which the setting does admirably.

The mercenary attitude of the protagonist is refreshing, not gritty or jaded but honestly working hard to scramble up out of poverty. The action sequences are well written and manage to convey crappy orders that grunts execute because that is just how the system works.

Fine SF novel. Money well spent. Good entertainment, engrossing and real. Better than second-tier work from folks like Silverberg or whoever. Solid, visual, no-fat writing. Great technical skill at describing action, and he makes the most of his strengths. Strictly mature professional, no self-indulgence or slack, no major false moves, quite a trick for a guy with no editor. I didn't notice the prose at all, which is the highest praise there is for guys whose names don't end in Vance or Plunkett. Three or four minor "continuity errors", but nothing story-critical. I was uncomfortable with how comfortable the characters were inflicting casualties on massively outgunned opponents, but combat is ugly stuff by nature and that's a matter of taste. And they get chewed up real good soon enough (loose end there, though). It's a bit episodic, like any military fiction -- the characters have to go where they're told, though a clever enough plotter could make that work to his advantage, I'm sure. High concept: SPACE MARINES SEINFELD!!!!!

It doesn't rise to the first rank: It doesn't rattle your head -- though chapter thirteen starts off pretty intense. Characterization isn't deep. Not a whole lot of detailed interior life or conflict, or anyway not much that stuck in my head. More than the Lensman novels, though! But none of Smith's vast lunatic sweep and grandeur, either. Tight, focused, practical, concrete. With that kind of thing, I'd like a little (I said little) more interior agony b.s. in the mix, or some weirder stuff that'd grab you by the nuts more, but if the author just gives us more of the same next time out, I'll happily buy that and gobble it up. He is who he is. Maybe blow up some bigger stuff. The author is very good at describing stuff blowing up and bad things happening without sounding amateurish or perfunctory. I'd like to see him wreck the s#¡ t out of some Iain-Banks-scale toys.

So that's the deal. Good old fashioned gripping readable military adventure SF, without any Dicksonian mystical twaddle. I'll re-up (HURR HURRR HURRRRR) for the sequel.

It's horrifying this doesn't have a publisher. It's a quality professional SF novel, better than 95% (UPDATE: 99%) of the field these days.

Two different stories and I only liked one of them
By Daniel
I started reading this novel and was amazed at how good it was. The storytelling was taut and realistic and I very much enjoyed it. I was drawn in by the main character and I was looking forward to what looked like it would be a Starship Troopers-style character evolution.
Then he kills a bunch of civilians in collateral damage (justifiably, I am not criticizing his actions, he had no choice) and suddenly he's in the space Navy with his girlfriend and then all character evolution stops dead in its tracks.
At that point, instead of an interesting and engrossing book that examines terrestrial politics, we get an incredibly UNrealistic alien invasion novel with no character advancement and cardboard cutouts as characters. I don't know why the author chose this path but it was very disappointing. If he had done this whole book with the POV character in the TA fighting on Earth, trying to trace down where the rioters in Detroit got military weapons, that would have been an awesome novel, particularly for a first timer. Instead, we got half an awesome novel and half a cheesy alien story.
Too bad. I would have given five stars to that OTHER novel...

To Selena, with Love, by Chris Perez

One of the most compelling and adored superstars in Latin music history, Selena was nothing short of a phenomenon who shared all of herself with her millions of devoted fans. Her tragic murder, at the young age of twenty-three, stripped the world of her talent and boundless potential, her tightly knit family of their beloved angel, and her husband, Chris Perez, of the greatest love he had ever known.

For over a decade, Chris held on to the only personal thing he had left from his late wife: the touching and sometimes painful memories of their very private bond. Now, for the first time, Chris opens up about their unbreakable friendship, forbidden relationship, and blossoming marriage, which were cut short by Selena’s unforgivable death.

Chris’s powerful story gives a rare glimpse into Selena’s sincerity and vulnerability when falling in love, strength and conviction when fighting for that love, and absolute resilience when finding peace and normalcy with her family’s acceptance of the only man she called her husband. While showcasing a side of Selena that has never been disclosed before and clarifying certain misconceptions about her life and death, To Selena, with Love is an everlasting love story that immortalizes the heart and soul of an extraordinary, unforgettable, and irreplaceable icon.

Still Dreaming of You
By Kimarie T
Those who know me know that I am not a big book reader. I enjoy reading magazine, informational books...such as those. Never would I have found myself reading an ENTIRE book from start to finish in 4 hours. But, in March 1995 when I was in 5th grade, news rang out at my school that Selena had died. Everyone had asked,"Who?" but not me...for my grandmother had loved her for years. Who would want to harm Selena? From then on, I became tangled in who she was. And I found many similarities. I was Mexican-American also. I hardly spoke or understood Spanish. I was even wearing bangs and lipstick at 11.
For years, I wondered why Chris Perez kept silent but was so grateful that he finally opened up to share his memories with us. It's been 17 years that we lost her. And with the pain we thought we already felt, this book seems to help "stich up" the wounds.
Chris helps you to see who the REAL Selena was. The kind-hearted, funny girl from Texas. She was just like anyone of us.
I recommend this book to all who have heard her songs, saw the movie and anyone who has a dream but is afraid to follow it. For, Selena, this Mexican-American girl from Texas, dreamed big and made it.

Thanks Chris!

Wonderful, personal account of off stage Selena
By megsinspain
Selena fans have been waiting for years for a book like this. No one in her family has ever personally penned any sort of biography on her, and this may be the closest we'll ever get. The timeline of the book follows a similar timeline to Selena the movie (minus her childhood and the original Los Dinos years of course), it provides a personal account of Chris' perspective as a band member of Los Dinos, what it was like to be on tour with them, including the early days and the later success, how his relationship with Selena began, the details of their elopement, and the ups and downs they went through as a newly married couple trying to juggle fame, fortunate, family and 5 dogs. He also talks about the awful day she was murdered, his opinion of Yolanda, and his experience after Selena's death, though he doesn't go much into his present day personal life. It fills in many holes that the movie glossed over, not all, but many. Any true Selena fan will appreciate this book. It is so easy to see Selena's smile and hear her laugh the way Chris describes her, he brings her back to life in the pages of the book, making her come alive more as a human being through personal anecdotes about Selena, opposed to focusing on the dazzling performer she was and the superstar she was going to become. It's much less about Selena's success as an artist (though of course that is talked about), and more about how she and Chris felt, what they were going through as the band became more and more successful, and how their relationship grew and evolved. It's like an inside guide to what was happening on a personal level that follows a similar timeline as the movie. Loved it.

Chris did such a great job detailing the love he had for his wife
By Amazon Customer
I was honestly waiting for this book to come out years ago - I literally finished this book in one day. Chris did such a great job detailing the love he had for his wife. It's really refreshing to know that Selena lived her life to the fullest up to her death and that she had an amazing husband supporting her along the way. I am glad they were able to share their success together and have all these great marital stories. Selena will always be my one and only female icon ! As for Chris, one can only hope to find a husband as supporting and loving in their lifetime.

Fabulous!
By Pammidi
I am a huge Colton fan. I have read everything he has written that I am aware of and have access to. I also own all he has offered for sale. They are all fabulous.

This one was a little different for him in that it was about paranormals. However, as far as the great story and romance it was still up to his usual talent. The story was interesting and the editing was excellent. I also enjoyed the humor of Jamie's questions.

My only complaint with any of your stories Mr. Colton is that I wish they were longer. Your romantic and sexy imaginings are very similar to mine. Unfortunately, I am neither as talented nor as imaginative as you have proven yourself to be.

A nice vampire story
By Nikyta
This review can be found at The Blogger Girls review site.

When Jamie gets a letter from his brother, Rudy, that sounds suspiciously like a goodbye, he quits his job and goes searching for him. When he arrives in a small town in Czech Republic, his search for Rudy leads to another dead end until he’s put in a situation that results in him meeting Tomas. Tomas knows something he’s not saying and when he finally reveals to Jamie the life Rudy was in, Jamie is revolted and disgusted. Unfortunately, Jamie’s attraction for Tomas wars with his fear of Tomas being a vampire. If Jamie has any hope of finding Rudy, he needs Tomas’ help but when Jamie’s association with Tomas puts him in the middle of a dangerous turf war, will all his sacrifices be for nothing… or will it finally lead to finding his brother?

The story is very simplistic in that it deals with Jamie’s determination of finding his brother. Even when he’s fearing for his life, he will do whatever it takes to find Rudy. He’s tenacious and stubborn but his lust for Tomas makes him a little bit uncomfortable when he finds out Tomas is a vampire. Tomas is much more than he seems. He’s a vampire who’s very selective of his lovers but he’s immediately drawn to Jamie from the beginning. Readers should be warned that this book is insta-love but I liked that about them because their ‘bonding’ gave them both a jealous and possessive streak (which I love in characters) that I found enjoyable. I also really liked that Jamie had such issues with Tomas’ nature, which caused him to struggle with what his head was telling him to do and what his heart was telling him to do.

My biggest issue with this book, though, was that it lacked any depth to the characters or the world. While we knew a little about the characters, I didn’t feel like there was enough information to make them three dimensional. The same goes for the world. The reader knows there are multiple covens in the area but we don’t know how it all works, the hierarchy, why the Russians wanted to start a war, etc. So, by the end, I was left with a bunch of questions about vampires in general and how that society worked.

In the end, I still really enjoyed this one. I like Rob Colton’s writing and I liked how this dealt with Jamie’s struggle in wanting Tomas but hating what he was. It’s not a story that is filled with uniqueness but I think that readers who enjoy vampires with some romance, some sex and a bit of kidnapping will like it anyway. I’m hoping there’s a sequel because there was an obvious connection between Rudy and Horst that I would love to read about, as well as, getting to see Tomas and Jamie in their new lives.

Seabed Fluid Flow: The Impact on Geology, Biology and the Marine Environment, by Alan Judd, Martin Hovland

Seabed fluid flow involves the flow of gases and liquids through the seabed. Such fluids have been found to leak through the seabed into the marine environment in seas and oceans around the world - from the coasts to deep ocean trenches. This geological phenomenon has widespread implications for the sub-seabed, seabed, and marine environments. Seabed fluid flow affects seabed morphology, mineralization, and benthic ecology. Natural fluid emissions also have a significant impact on the composition of the oceans and atmosphere; and gas hydrates and hydrothermal minerals are potential future resources. This book describes seabed fluid flow features and processes, and demonstrates their importance to human activities and natural environments. It is targeted at research scientists and professionals with interests in the marine environment. Colour versions of many of the illustrations, and additional material - most notably feature location maps - can be found at www.cambridge.org/9780521819503.

Review
'I found the book to have significant breadth and detail, and believe it will be of use to scientists in both academia and industry.' Geofluids

'If you ask yourself 'Do I need the update if I have the 1988 version of the book?' the answer is yes. While the excellent introduction to pockmarks of the North Sea is retained from the previous book, Seabed Fluid Flow gives more room to other seep structures and their global distribution, such as mud volcanoes and hydrate systems. ... this book provides an excellent overview of submarine seepage phenomena, and stimulates ongoing scientific discussions needed to understand these systems. We recommend Seabed Fluid Flow to scientists and other professionals, but certainly also to students specializing in fluid-flow related topics.' Oceanography

'A particularly novel feature, emphasising the educative value of this publication, is the 15 PowerPoint presentations on various aspects of seabed seepage ... The website makes reading the book an interactive process, and serves to emphasise that it should be a constant reference on the shelves of those working offshore - a very reasonable price for this very useful book.' Amazing Book
By M. Barry
Judd and Hovland do a great job of explaining seabed seepages in an easy to follow, well written manner. A great follow up to their first book on Seabed Pockmarks and Seepages from 1988.
Every aspect of seepages, from pockmarks, to hydrothermal, to mud volcanoes are covered in this book, as well as examples from all over the world. The compilation of previous studies is extensive.
Kudos to the authors!

Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances, by Neil Gaiman

Multiple award winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman returns to dazzle, captivate, haunt, and entertain with this third collection of short fiction following Smoke and Mirrors and Fragile Things—which includes a never-before published American Gods story, “Black Dog,” written exclusively for this volume.

In this new anthology, Neil Gaiman pierces the veil of reality to reveal the enigmatic, shadowy world that lies beneath. Trigger Warning includes previously published pieces of short fiction—stories, verse, and a very special Doctor Who story that was written for the fiftieth anniversary of the beloved series in 2013—as well “Black Dog,” a new tale that revisits the world of American Gods, exclusive to this collection.

Trigger Warning explores the masks we all wear and the people we are beneath them to reveal our vulnerabilities and our truest selves. Here is a rich cornucopia of horror and ghosts stories, science fiction and fairy tales, fabulism and poetry that explore the realm of experience and emotion. In Adventure Story—a thematic companion to The Ocean at the End of the Lane—Gaiman ponders death and the way people take their stories with them when they die. His social media experience A Calendar of Tales are short takes inspired by replies to fan tweets about the months of the year—stories of pirates and the March winds, an igloo made of books, and a Mother’s Day card that portends disturbances in the universe. Gaiman offers his own ingenious spin on Sherlock Holmes in his award-nominated mystery tale The Case of Death and Honey. And Click-Clack the Rattlebag explains the creaks and clatter we hear when we’re all alone in the darkness.

A sophisticated writer whose creative genius is unparalleled, Gaiman entrances with his literary alchemy, transporting us deep into the realm of imagination, where the fantastical becomes real and the everyday incandescent. Full of wonder and terror, surprises and amusements, Trigger Warning is a treasury of delights that engage the mind, stir the heart, and shake the soul from one of the most unique and popular literary artists of our day.

Review
Praise for Trigger Warning: “Everything that endears Gaiman to his legions of fans is on display ... Full of all manner of witches and monsters and things that creep in the night, this collection will thoroughly satisfy faithful fans and win new ones—if there’s anyone out there left unconverted. (Kirkus Reviews)

“There’s much to revel in here, especially for those who’ve never read anything by Gaiman.” (Huffington Post)

“[T]his collection of stories and poems doesn’t disappoint....Gaiman has warned us about the monsters, but then come magic and miracles. And love.” (Washington Post)

“[Trigger Warning] showcases the breadth and depth of Gaiman’s talent and the unique plangent warmth he brings to fantasy fiction. He is never anything less than a pleasure to read.” (Financial Times)

“Gaiman’s is one of the most distinctive voices in modern fantasy.” (Locus)

“Gaiman displays an uncanny knack for compressing his expansive imagination into the close quarters of his stories’ caves, cottages, and creepy rooms....[he] takes full advantage of his wide range, and it makes for exciting, often musical writing.” (Boston Globe)

‘All of [the stories] are told with an assured, masterly confidence that should please anyone who misses seeing a new Ray Bradbury collection on the shelf at the library.” (Newsday)

“Gaiman calls the stories a “hodgepodge,” with no real interweaving theme throughout. But each of the stories and poems celebrates a different aspect of storytelling that has informed the author’s life.” (NPR)

“Trigger Warning is a comfortable hodgepodge of material ... but there’s enough serious-minded and deeply felt fantasy and horror to make readers hope that it won’t be almost a decade before Gaiman completes another similar volume.” (San Francisco Gate)

“[Gaiman]’s prolific, like Stephen King, and apparently inexhaustible: He dreams up stories as naturally as he breathes.” (Slate)

“Lovingly crafted...gleefully enjoyable.” (Bustle.com)

“[I]t’s the phenomenon of connecting mythology and modern life that makes Gaiman such a captivating author.” (Winnipeg Free Press)

“Neil Gaiman’s writing is so present, so engaging, that it can send spasms of bone-chilling terror through your body and your reaction would still be, ‘Please sir, I want some more.’” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

“Each short piece serves as an exciting foray into some macabre microcosm of his mind. ...It’s a testament to Gaiman’s versatility that he exhibits so many different styles of writing in this single anthology.” (The Harvard Crimson)

“The short stories in this collection are shocking, disturbing, funny, insightful ... Trigger Warning offers a good introduction to the works of Neil Gaiman, or a delightful addition to the collection of someone who has been following him for a long time. If you’re a fan, don’t miss this one.” (Oklahoma City Oklahoman)

“There is something for every type of Gaiman fan here, and those new to his work will find this to be a solid introduction to the type of stories he crafts: lyrical, literary, sometimes quite chilling, and always strange and provocative. ...This is a book to savor and enjoy.” (Bookreporter.com)

“Those who want to greet and shake hands, or settle in for a conversational catch-up with Gaiman’s delightfully dramatic minstrel’s tale-by-the-campfire style will love everything in Trigger Warning, naturally.” (Booklist)

“Gaiman is such a powerful and evocative writer that almost everything he churns out serves to justify the aforementioned cultural triumph of fantasy literature over realism and modernism. Gaiman’s attention to craft, passion for language and profound respect for the mythological roots...come through even in his abbreviated prose fragments.” (New York Times Book Review)

More things in heaven and earth, Horatio.
By EA Solinas
The mind of Neil Gaiman is a fertile place of gods, monsters, aliens, magic lingering in ordinary places and a sense that the world is a much wilder, stranger place than we think it is.

And all those things come up in "Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances," Gaiman's third collection of his short stories and poems -- while these stories can be as different from each other as humanly possible (an ode to David Bowie, a few twisted fairy tales, a historical story about a Scottish dwarf with revenge on his mind), they share a sense of magic and cosmic wonderment, misting through his elegant, versatile prose.

Among the tales here:
* "Black Dog," a story set a few years after "American Gods." Shadow is wandering through England on his way back to the US, when he meets a kindly couple who allow him to stay in their home. But the specter of a faerie dog brings death, mystery, and an ancient magic that could be fatal even to an American god...
* A Scottish dwarf asks a former reaver to help him find a certain cave, supposedly filled with magical gold. As the two men journey to the Misty Isle, the dwarf gradually reveals his true reason for being there.
* A haunting look at the old age of Sherlock Holmes, reflecting on the decay of the British empire and solving one final mystery.
* A timid young artist hears that his first teenage girlfriend has been in contact with some of the people he knows... and the problem is, he made her up.
* Jemima Glorfindel Petula Ramsey's questionnaire, and exactly what happened to her fake-tan-loving sister Nerys. Hint: it involves floating, glowing, claims of godhood and dark chocolate.
* A year's worth of mini-stories, involving ghosts, pirates, genies, preteen soldiers, vicious ducks, a brazier, a homeless kid, a mysterious string of bizarre deliveries, disagreeing parents, igloos made of books, Australian fires and what they create, and a magical ring that keeps coming back.
* A handful of poems, about chairs, landladies, Saint Columba, a witch who "hid her life in a box made of dirt," and the evil fairy from "Sleeping Beauty."
* A flea market seller who has a strange story of time travel, interdimensional rooms, ancient empires, tiny statuettes and a boy named Farfal The Unfortunate.
* Obediah Polkinghorn, the Uninventor, who has the ability to alter reality so that certain inventions (flying cars, jetpacks, the Wispamuzak) never come into existence, and what he does when he finished uninventing forever.
* "Nothing O'Clock," a Dr. Who fanfic (does it count as a fanfic if it's professionally published, and is by a man who has written actual episodes?), where the Doctor and Amy arrive on Earth... only to discover that it is devoid of humans, after being officially sold to the Kin. How to fix it? Go back to when it was first sold by an unwitting family!
* A pair of fairy tales retold in Gaiman's sensibilities -- an update of "Diamonds and Toads" set in a bleak, dreary urban environment, and "The Sleeper and the Spindle," a sort of mash-up of "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty," starring a queen who decides to rescue a legendary sleeping princess with the help of her dwarf sidekicks.
* And several other stories that linger on the fringes -- a "lunar labyrinth" that grants wishes to people who successfully navigate it, a love letter, a mother lamenting her son's horrifying death at sea, a pleasantly unimpressive mother who knows of interesting "adventures," a man struggling to remember the name of a great author, a guy who learns of the madness that comes from visiting Jerusalem, a spooky little story about the terrifying Click-Clacks, and a mythic sci-fi ode to David Bowie.

Many authors are commonly called "magical," but Neil Gaiman deserves the label more than most -- he has a special knack for unpredictability that few authors can even approach. Not only can anything happen in his collections of short stories, but you have no idea what KIND of "anything" will flow from the wellspring of his mind. There's no obvious pattern, no overarching theme that might restrict his imagination.

And that is one of the best aspects of "Trigger Warning." In this collection, Gaiman deftly leaps from the macabre to the whimsical, the gloriously weird to the dramatic, the haunting to the magical. No matter how mundane the setting, he can draw back a veil and reveal something that was hidden from our eyes, whether it's dark magic ("Black Dog," "About Cassandra"), personal tragedy and drama ("Down To A Sunless Sea," "The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains") or just the strangeness of the world we live in which we otherwise might not notice ("Jerusalem").

And his writing is no less versatile. While every story is written in a crisp, shimmering style that is very recognizably his, he drifts around through different kinds of stories -- one is told through a questionnaire, another is an overheard monologue, and some are just conversations. What unites them is the glimmering clarity of his writing, full of beautiful similes ("His hair framed his face like a wolf-grey halo") and snappy cleverness ("And pterodactyls have been extinct for fifty million years." "If you say so, dear. Your father never really talked about it").

Neil Gaiman at his best is on display in "Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances" -- a collage of shorter pieces, ranging from darkly enchanting novellas to magical little puffs of whimsy. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy, but a few of them can be found here.

Gaiman Excels at Short Fiction; Excellent Collection
By Scott Knight
I just finished reading Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman, and once again he has hit the ball out of the park. This is another fantastic collection of short stories from one of the best story-tellers around. There is no specific theme running through the stories; however, Gaiman mentions that a "trigger warning" suggests that readers should be aware that they may encounter characters or situations that may "trigger" fear or otherwise upset them. (I didn't really see this, although several of the stories are dark, bordering on downright creepy).

While several of the stories were previously published, but they were all new to me. Among my favorites are: A Lunar Labyrinth (very creepy); The Case of Death and Honey (a terrific Sherlock Holmes story which also explains how he seems to live longer than he should); Nothing O'Clock (a Doctor Who story with the Eleventh Doctor: It seemed to perfectly capture Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor, and was a terrific read); and Kether to Malkuth (a bittersweet story that seems to be even deeper than it appears, and is hard to explain); and The Sleeper and the Spindle (a cool and unique retelling of the Snow White and Sleeping Beauty stories).

Gaiman is a master at his craft, and like pretty much everything else he writes, Trigger Warning is wonderful. It is immersive and sublime, hiding themes and bigger ideas in prose that is exquisite and easy to read (that should be a book blurb).

One caution - The main reason I wanted to read this book was for the story Black Dog, which closes the collection (it is a sequel to Gaiman's terrific American Gods). Unfortunately, my preview copy did not contain this story, which means I'm going to have to work to track it down.

I highly recommend Trigger Warning. Gaiman fans will love it, and the short story format provides an easy and unintimidating way to sample his works for those looking to read him for the first time.

I received a preview copy of this book from HarperCollins Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

Escapist fun from an awesome storyteller
By B. Case
Disturbances? Neil Gaiman’s newest short story collection is called “Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances.” I just love that last word in the subtitle! It’s such a perfect word to convey the deliciously off-kilter feelings I felt when I read these stories. Even though this book has just been published, I’m already in the process of reading it a second time. I couldn’t resist. Gaiman is such an awesome storyteller and this collection really showcases his creative literary talent.

The first time I read this book, I was swept away with the pure joy of the reading experience. Of course, when the book ended, I felt a big let down. I wanted more stories. We human animals must have some innate longing for myth and fantasy; Gaiman’s stories seem to quench that longing in some essential and primal way. That’s the deep-seated urge that must draw me to his books.

I certainly don’t want to give the impression that I was overjoyed with each and every story. Isn’t it true that none of us ever love every chocolate in a box, every song in an album, or every story in a collection? Some stories are better than others, and a few I didn’t like at all, but in the balance, I was besotted…and that’s coming from a reader who doesn’t particularly like short stories in the first place. But I do love Gaiman, and reading him is all about being transport to another realm of reality, about having your normal everyday emotions disturbed (yes, here’s that word again), about being tipped off balance into a state of wonder, humor, terror, suspense, spine-tingling chills, or a delightful mixture of all of that, and more.

Every one of the stories in this collection was new to me, but as the author explained in the introduction, most have been published before. There are only three totally new stories. The remaining twenty-one were published one or more times in some other venue or media. But few people have been exposed to them there even though a few are major award winners. Most had a previous life as part of a multi-author anthology dedicated to a specific overarching theme. Five stories had a previous life in a multi-author anthology celebrating a famous author, namely: Gene Wolf, Ray Bradbury, Jack Vance, Sherlock Holmes, and Arthur C. Clarke. Two were collaborations with musical drama and performance artist Amanda Palmer. Four were published as stand-alone stories: one for a literary magazine, another for a newspaper, a third for a year-long interactive fan-based Twitter experiment, and a fourth for a BBC Radio 4 production. All are captivating and unique glimpses into the staggeringly creative mind of Neil Gaiman.

Most of the previously published stories in this book probably escaped notice by the lion’s share of Gaiman fans. In today’s world, relatively few people read short stories, especially when they’re published in obscure anthologies. By pulling together all his most recent short stories and selling them in one volume, Gaiman will be able to reach a far larger audience. When done well, short stories are the gems of the literary world. Gaiman’s short fiction deserves to be read and treasured. I rediscovered that while reading this book. I’d forgotten how marvelous short stories can be when they’re told by a master storyteller.

The collection is aimed at adults, but I’m sure Gaiman’s legions of young adult fans will love this book, too. None of the stories in this collection are appropriate for young children: this is not because they may cause nightmares, but rather because they deal with adult themes that children will not comprehend.

I loved this book. It was full of enchanting stories that delightfully disturbed my senses and inhabited my heart.

For those of you who may have encountered a good number of Gaiman’s short stories elsewhere, here a list of the stories in this book:

Making a Chair
A Lunar Labyrinth
The Thing About Cassandra
Down to a Sunless Sea
